OSWEGO, N.Y.. - The Daemen College men's tennis team scored a 9-0 win over Oswego State University in a non-conference match here today. Daemen snapped a three-match slide with the win, improving to 6-14 on the season. Oswego, a NCAA Division III member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), dropped to 5-6.
The match was played under a Division III scoring format that awards points to each of the three doubles winners.
Daemen managed to open a 3-0 lead by sweeping through doubles play. The Wildcats picked up two quick points at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y.) posted an 8-2 win over Curtis Farmer and Justin Scuderi at No. 2 doubles, and James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.) and Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored an 8-3 win in the third position over Anthony Salerno and Daniel Maslowski.
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Burgos, Spain) played the most competitive match of the day at No. 1 doubles, as the Daemen duo outlasted OSU's Vlad Djuraskovic and Brian Emigholz by a score of 8-6.
Daemen scored straight-set wins in all six singles matches to complete the shutout.
Ruiz Martinez improved to 8-14 overall on the year (5-2 over his last seven singles matches) following a 6-1, 6-1 win over Djuraskovic at No. 1 singles. Gonzalez Villegas snapped a personal four-match losing streak following a 6-1, 6-2 win over Emigholz at No. 2 singles. O'Brien, who has now won seven of his last nine singles matches, picked up his team-leading ninth win of the year following a 6-1, 6-1 win over Farmer at No. 3 singles. Williamsson, Milner and Schaab-Rozbicki also picked up singles wins for Daemen.
Daemen is idle until April 23 when it closes out its 2018-19 season with a match at Division I Niagara University.
