Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Wildcats Down D-1 Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Daemen College men's tennis team picked up the program's second win against a Division I opponent  today, defeating Coppin State University 7-0. Daemen has now won three of their last four dual matches, improving to 4-11 on the season. Coppin State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, fell to 0-10.

Daemen opened things up with a pair of 6-4 wins in doubles play. Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) won in the top doubles position over CSU's Jorge Rodriguez Rey and Sam Scala-McNeill. Senior David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) teamed with classmate Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) for the point at No. 2 doubles as they defeated Prabh Bal and Henrique Sada. For Gonzalez Villegas, it marked the 60th win of his career between singles and doubles play, becoming just the fourth player in team history to reach that total.

Coppin State did not field a No. 3 doubles pair, giving Daemen a sweep of doubles play and a 1-0 lead in the match. In a new scoring format this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.

Daemen completed the full match sweep by winning five singles matches, and gaining a point by default in the sixth singles position. Ruiz Martinez led the way with a 6-3. 3-6, 10-2 win in the top singles position over Rodriguez Rey. It marked his 60th career singles/doubles win, bringing him into the same company that Gonzalez Villegas joined earlier in the match. It also brings Ruiz Martinez's career singles win total to 32, tying John LeMar for second in team history.

Additional singles wins today came from Gonzalez Villegas, Williamson III, Wilde and Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.). Gonzalez Villegas downed Sada 6-0, 6-4 in the second position. Wilde was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Scala-McNeill in the third position. O'Brien continued his solid freshman season with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Bal in the fourth position. And Williamson III earned his second straight singles win by defeating Zaipo Oula 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth position.

Daemen is now 2-0 all-time against Coppin State. The Wildcats' 6-1 win over the Eagles on April 8, 2016 was the program's first-ever win against a Division I opponent.

Daemen returns to East Coast Conference play Sunday when they meet University of the District of Columbia at 12 p.m.
