Women's Tennis Falls To Streaking Spartans

SPARKILL, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the East Coast Conference following a 7-0 setback at St. Thomas Aquinas College here today. STAC, which was picked third in the ECC preseason poll, ran its winning streak to six-straight matches and improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Wildcats actually picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, but the host Spartans earned the "best of three" doubles point. The outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
  • Junior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and freshman Lena Gruber (Munich, Germany) claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, as they defeated junior Sofia Shutko and senior Katarina Lopez 6-4. STAC posted a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and earned the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • The most competitive action during singles play came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
  • Stasiuk battled freshman Eliza Mulder at No. 2 singles. Stasiuk took the first game 7-6, before Mulder answered with a 6-2 win in game two. Mulder, the reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, outlasted Stasiuk 10-6 in game three to earn the point.
  • Freshman Erica Jasinski (Fairview, Pa.) turned in a solid effort for Daemen at No. 3 singles, but eventually dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to sophomore Carla Mentrup.
