Purple Eagles Down Wildcats In Non-Conference Action

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Niagara University women's tennis team swept all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over Daemen College today in a match played at Williamsville South High school. The Division I Purple Eagles evened their record at 2-2 on the year, while the Division II Wildcats dropped to 0-5.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The host Wildcats prevailed at the No. 1 doubles spot, but Niagara earned the "doubles point" after posting wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
  • Junior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and freshman Lena Gruber (Munich, Germany) claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, as they defeated sophomore Erika Gonzalez and junior Megan Gamble, 6-3. That tandem is now 2-4 in doubles play on the year. NU posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and earned the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • Gruber and Stasiuk also turned in solid efforts at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively
  • Gruber suffer a 6-3, 7-6 loss to junior Olga Donchu, while Stasiuk fell to senior Andreea Peteu, 7-6, 6-4.
