The match marked the season opener for both the Wildcats and Marauders. Aided by a default win in the No. 3 doubles position, Millersville swept through the opening portion of the match. Carlos Martinez-Lucas teamed with Ben Fellman for a 6-3 win in the top position. MU's Rodrigo Lorencin and Frank Yanni scored a 6-3 win in their No. 2 doubles match. In singles play, Daemen broke through with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 2 position by Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.). The Daemen sophomore, who earned second-team All-ECC honors last season, improved to 11-4 in his collegiate singles career. Daemen also got a solid effort from senior Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) who pushed Martinez-Lucas, the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, to a third set tie-break before falling 6-7, 6-2, 10-5. Fellman (6-3, 6-3), Lorencin (6-3, 6-2), Santiago Ramos (6-2, 6-2) and Jose Alcazar (default) also picked up singles wins for the Marauders. Daemen's brief fall season continues next weekend (Sept. 13-16) when the Wildcats travel to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championships. Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
