Wildcats Down New WNY Rivals In Spring Season Opener

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team got their 2019-20 season resumed in a big way, downing new Western New York rival Medaille College by a 7-2 final score in a non-conference dual match at the South Towns Tennis Club. It marked the spring season opener for the Wildcats - their first match since closing their brief fall season in early October - as they improved to 1-4 overall. Medaille, which is fielding a men's tennis team for just a second season, dropped to 0-1.

Daemen's lineup today consisted of five players - seniors Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) and James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.), junior Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.), sophomore Patrick O'Brien (Pittsford, N.Y.) and freshman Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) - four of whom (Wilde, Schaab-Rozbicki, Williamson III and Vance) who earned wins in both singles and doubles play.

Wilde and Williamson III competed in the No. 1 doubles position, winning 8-0 over Medaille's Tom Greenhalgh and Pablo De Ramon. Vance and Schaab-Rozbicki were also 8-0 winners in the No. 2 doubles position over Matthew Burke and Jonny Pitts.

In singles action, Daemen swept position one through five. Wilde (6-0, 6-0 in No. 1), Williamson III (6-0, 6-0 in No. 3), Vance (6-0, 6-0 in No. 4) and Schaab-Rozbicki (6-0, 6-0 in No. 5) all won without dropping a game. O'Brien was nearly as flawless, winning 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.

With his wins today, Wilde moves into sole possession of fourth place on Daemen's all-time wins list (combined singles and doubles) with 64 in his career. He entered today's match tied for fourth with Gregory Lowe who competed for Daemen from 2012-16. He also broke ties with Lowe on Daemen's career singles and doubles wins lists. Wilde now ranks third in team history with 33 singles wins, and tied for fourth (with Ricardo Ruiz Martinez) in doubles wins with 31.

Medaille, which posted a 7-4 record in their inaugural campaign last spring, is a member of NCAA Division III and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Mavs' roster includes five players who hail from foreign countries, including returning All-AMCC players Burke and Pitts. Today's match was played under a Division III scoring format that awards points to each of the three doubles winners. Medaille's only points in the match came in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions where Daemen did not submit players.

Daemen is now 26-11 all-time against Division III opponents. The Wildcats have won 13 of their last 14 matches against Division III teams.

Daemen returns to action tomorrow with a non-conference match against fellow Division II member Mercyhurst University at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.
