Wildcats Down Purple Knights To Extend Winning Streak

Daemen Now Winners Of 9-Straight Games

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - All five starters scored in double figures to lead Daemen College to an 87-65 win over the University of Bridgeport in East Coast Conference women's basketball action tonight along the Connecticut shore. Daemen, the only team to feature three of the ECC's top 10 scorers, got a combined 59 points from Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.), Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) and Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) to win their ninth-straight game. The Wildcats own the longest active winning streak in the ECC, and only University of the Sciences (13-straight wins) holds a longer winning streak among East Region squads.

The Wildcats continue to be off to the best start of the program's NCAA Division II era (2015-present) with tonight's win pushing their overall record to 17-3, and their conference mark to 9-1. The Wildcats remain a game back of St. Thomas Aquinas College (18-3, 10-0 ECC) for first place in the ECC standings.  On the flip side, Bridgeport suffered thier ninth-straight defeat, falling to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in ECC play.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • White shot 7-for-15 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to total a game-high 21 points - one shy of her career-high. It marked her third 20-point outing of the season.
  • Titus also shot 7-for-15 overall, including 3-for-9 from three-point range, and totaled 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block in just 24 minutes of action.
  • Filbert played all but one minute of the contest and collected 18 points, eight boards and four assists.
  • Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Ashli Jeune (Westampton, N.J.) also reached double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Heinold added five assists, sharing team-high honors with Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.), and also extended her personal streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 12.
  • The five Daemen starters combined for 80 points, shooting 29-for-62 from the field (46.8%) and making nine of Daemen's 10 three-point field goals.
  • Gracen Kerr put up 17 points and a game-high eight assists, and Jaqualah Holliman totaled 17 points as well to pace the Purple Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgeport's only leads of the game came at 2-0 and 4-2. A Titus three-pointer at the 7:06 mark of the opening quarter snapped a 6-6 tie and sparked Daemen on an extended run. The Wildcats outscored the Purple Knights 23-8 through the remainder of the period to establish a 29-14 lead. Titus and White accounted for 10 points apiece in the quarter.
  • Daemen scored the first two buckets of the second quarter, extending their lead to 19 points (33-14). Bridgeport managed to cut the deficit to 13 on multiple occasions, including on Kyle Felton's layup just before halftime to make it 45-32 in favor of the Wildcats. UB outscored Daemen 18-16 in the period.
  • UB continued to chip away in the third quarter, and pulled within 56-49 on a Holliman three-pointer. Daemen responded with a three-pointer by Titus and later pushed their lead back to 14 points (69-55) on a pair of Filbert free throws.
  • A 6-0 run for the Purple Knights that spanned the final moments of the third and opening moments of the fourth quarters got them back to a single-digit deficit (69-61). But that's as close as they would get as Daemen embarked on a decisive 18-2 run to shut the door. Heinold and Filbert combined for 12 points in the spurt, and Daemen held with Bridgeport without a field goal for more than eight minutes. UB missed seven consecutive field goal attempts and committed seven turnovers in that span.
