AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College student-athletes completed nearly 3,000 hours of community service, leading the Wildcats to a No. 5 ranking out or more than 300 NCAA Division II institutions participating in the 2019-20 NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service Competition. Throughout the academic year, student-athletes across the NCAA's three divisions logged their community service hours using the Helper Helper app. The NCAA has released a full report detailing the impact of the community service competition. It marks the second-straight year that Daemen has been among the Division II leaders after ranking sixth with nearly 3,700 hours in 2018-19.

"This year, our student-athletes once again demonstrated they are committed to more than just their academics and sports," said Hailey Dietrich, student-athlete success and community engagement coordinator for Daemen Athletics. "They volunteered their time in the community generously, all while taking full course loads and competing at an extremely high level. I am excited for next year and hope that we can continue to increase our volunteerism, reach new community partners and that our student-athletes continue to learn more from the community in which they live."

Student-athletes from Daemen's 17 intercollegiate athletic teams contributed to a wide variety of community service initiatives, including visits to local elementary schools, participation in the Western New York Girls in Sport Service Day and Step Up for Down Syndrome, conducting a canned food drive, volunteering with the Daemen Center for Allied and Unified Sport and Exercise (CAUSE) and participating in various sports clinics for area youths. Daemen student-athletes also organized and executed fundraising events for non-profit organizations like Team IMPACT and Make-A-Wish Foundation. In all, Daemen student-athletes conducted service initiatives that benefited 11 community organizations, producing an economic impact valued at over $75,000.

Daemen teams that performed the most community service hours include women's soccer (458), women's track and field (437), men's soccer (399), men's basketball (370) and men's track and field (296). The NCAA-released report includes a breakdown of rankings by sport and gender. The top-ranking Daemen teams among their Division II brethren include...
  • Women's Track & Field (1st)
  • Men's Volleyball (2nd)
  • Men's Tennis (3rd)
  • Men's Track & Field (3rd)
  • Men's Basketball (4th)

As a whole, NCAA student-athletes turned 15,175 volunteering opportunities into more than 467,000 hours of community service, a total that carries an estimated $11.88 million economic impact. With 179,524 total hours, NCAA Division II student-athletes contributed 38 percent of the total hours.
