Women's Basketball jumps in D2SIDA National Poll Wildcats are No. 17 team in the country 1/19/2021 4:43:00 PM By: By Joe Kraus, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant AMHERST, N.Y. – For a second consecutive week, Daemen College women's basketball is recognized on the national stage. After their opening weekend of play, the Wildcats jumped to No. 17 in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) national media poll released this afternoon. The latest ranking comes after the Wildcats debuted at No. 20 last week. Daemen remains at the top of the D2SIDA East Region media poll for a second straight week – all uncharted waters for the program in their NCAA Division II era. The defending champions of the East Coast Conference, Daemen kicked off their pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign with an 82-64 victory over Mercyhurst last Sautrday at Lumsden Gynmasium. It was a long-awaited matchup for the Wildcats, who saw their first game action since March 8, 2020 (314 days) when they won the ECC championship against Molloy. Redshirt senior guard Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) led a trio of double-figure scorers with a game-high 20 points - including the 1,000th of her career - en route to earning ECC Player of the Week honors. Senior forward Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) and junior forward Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds in the win. Dating back to the 2018-19 campaign, the Wildcats have won 38 of their last 45 games and have now won 19 straight home games – the longest active streak among East Region teams and the eighth-longest streak in Division II. Daemen is also 22-1 when holding opponents to 65 points or less since the start of last season. The D2SIDA national media poll is conducted by sports information professionals representing the eight regions that comprise NCAA Division II. Today's poll is the second released by D2SIDA since early December. Daemen returns to action this weekend with a pair of contests against ECC newcomer D'Youville (Friday Jan. 22, away, 6 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 24, home, 12 p.m.).
