Women's Soccer Clinches Conference Tournament Berth

10/22/2021 2:21:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Thanks to Mercy College's 3-1 defeat of Queens College earlier today, Daemen College has clinched a berth to next month's East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship, a four-team tournament that will determine the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championship.

At 5-0-1 in conference play, Daemen remains the only ECC team without a conference loss this season. The Wildcats have amassed 16 points in the ECC standings (three points awarded for wins, one point for ties) and currently sit in second place. Mercy's victory today pushed them ahead of the Wildcats with 18 points and a 6-1-0 record. The Wildcats control their own destiny, and can earn the tournament's No. 1 seed with wins in their three remaining conference games.

The ECC Championship will feature the top four teams in the final league standings. The tournament semifinals will take place on Thursday, November 11 in games hosted by the No. 1 and 2 seeds. The highest seed remaining will host the tournament final on Sunday, November 14. Daemen will be making its second conference tournament appearance since gaining full NCAA Division II membership in 2015.

Daemen, which leads the ECC with 27 goals scored this season, returns to action tomorrow afternoon when league newcomer Staten Island travels to Western New York. First kick is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Williamsville South High School Stadium.

Daemen College features the premier NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 18 intercollegiate teams.
