ERIE, Pa. - The Daemen College women's bowling team stands in fourth place after opening day action of the 2021 Mercyhurst Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst University. The two-day event is taking place at Rolling Meadow Lanes and features eight schools: Daemen, Mercyhurst, Duquesne University, Wilmington University (Del.), Medaille College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Penn State Behrend and D'Youville College.
Today's action featured five traditionally scored matches. The Wildcats won three of their five matches and posted a pin total of 4,434. Duquesne topped the team standings with 4,931 total pins. Wilmington (4,610), Mercyhurst (4,455) and Medaille (4,411) rounded out the top five. Daemen's overall record now stands at 7-7 on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Daemen opened the day with a 1,015-879 loss to host Mercyhurst, before posting a 914-821 win over East Coast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan. The Wildcats then suffered a 1,061-836 loss to Duquesne, before closing out the day with back-to-back wins over Penn State Behrend (909-804) and cross-town rival Medaille (896-886).
- Junior Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.), who earned all-tournament honors at the Grapevine Classic hosted by Penn State Behrend two weeks ago, continued her solid start to the season. She rolled a 267 in the loss to Mercyhurst, which ranked as the highest score among all bowlers today. She bowled over 200 in all five games today and closed out the day with a tournament-high 227 average. Her tournament-best pin total of 1,135 was 73 pins better than that of Olivia Farwell of Duquesne who placed second with 1,062 pins. Nowak also posted a 224 in the win over Roberts Wesleyan and a 234 in the win over Medaille.
- Graduate student Alex Hasiotis (Rochester, N.Y.) was the only other player to bowl in all five matches for Daemen today. She bowled a 212 in the win over Medaille and finished with a 184.2 average—good enough for 13th place in the individual standings.
- Senior Christina Aldridge (Webster, N.Y.) and sophomore Mollie Gizicki (Brighton, Mich.) both appeared in four matches today.
- Aldridge rolled a 182 in the win over Roberts Wesleyan and posted a 165.5 average on the day. Gizicki registered a 174 against Roberts Wesleyan and posted a 151.75 average.
- Junior Nicole Bergeron (Lima, N.Y.) competed in three matches and posted an impressive average of 185.3. She rolled a 210 in the win over Medaille. Fellow junior Paige Bartosz (West Seneca, N.Y.) also competed in three matches and rolled a 154 in the win over Medaille. Freshman Bri Cote (Charlton, Mass.) saw action in the win over Penn State Behrend and rolled a 155.
