DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – No matter the sport, when a contest has plenty at stake, all it takes is one play to determine the final outcome.
That was the case Saturday afternoon when Daemen women's soccer traveled downstate and faced the Mercy Mavericks at Mercy Field in a battle of two of the top teams in the East Coast Conference prior to kickoff.
In a game with seeding implications for the upcoming East Coast Conference tournament on the line, the Mercy offense capitalized on a rare turnover in the Daemen defensive zone when Dominique Bono scored the game-deciding goal at the 58:48 mark (59th minute) to secure a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats.
With the loss, Daemen women's soccer fell to 8-5-1 overall and 6-1-1 in East Coast Conference, ending their reign in recent weeks as the last unbeaten team in conference play. The loss also ended Daemen's hopes of clinching a top two seed in next month's conference tournament and hosting at least one postseason contest in front of their home crowd. Daemen is now 7-2-1 in their last 10 contests heading into the final week of the regular season.
With the victory, Mercy improves to 8-3-4 overall (7-1-0 ECC) and are 7-2-2 over their 11 contests.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Despite opportunities from both teams in the first half, including a booming kick on net from sophomore midfielder Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) just 17 seconds into the contest, the score remained 0-0 at the half thanks to the strong play of Daemen's Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) and Mercy's veteran Melissa Torres in net. This was the first time Daemen and their opponent held each other scoreless heading into halftime since a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15. Daemen entered Saturday 7-0-0 on the season when scoring first in a contest.
- After controlling the pace of the second half within Daemen territory, Mercy got on the scoreboard first at the 58:48 mark (59th minute.) A rare turnover in front of the Daemen net resulted in a 2-on-0 opportunity for Mercy as Kayla Camacho intercepted a pass and found Bono on the left side, who fired a shot on the low right side of the Daemen net for a 1-0 lead. The goal marked the first time Daemen trailed in a contest this season since a 2-0 deficit early in the second half against Bridgeport (2-2 tie on Oct. 16).
- Mercy outshot Daemen, 10-7, including five shots on goal in the victory. This marked the first time Daemen was outshot by an opponent since a 2-2 draw at Bridgeport on Oct. 16 (20-11.) Mercy also out-edged Daemen in corner kicks, 5-1.
- Daemen recorded three shots on goal in the loss. Along with Zeitz's shot 17 seconds into the contest, Daemen had one shot on goal apiece from junior forward Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) This marked the fewest shots on goal Daemen recorded in a contest this season since a two-shot outing in a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15. This also ended a nine-game streak where the Wildcats recorded at least five or more shots on net – a stretch which included five games where they finished in double-digits.
- Reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) recorded four saves in the loss. Today marked her 14th start in 2021 (17th in career.)
