Late Goal Denies Women’s Soccer Fifth Straight Win In 2-1 Loss Versus Stonehill

Daemen Faces First Loss In Nearly Three Weeks; Win Would Have Tied Program Record For Longest Winning Streak

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The winning streak has come to an end for Daemen women's soccer.

In what was appearing to be the Wildcats' first overtime game of the season, their opponent, Stonehill, had other plans. With less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Karleigh Schultz connected off a pass from veteran Meghan Lord and sent the ball just over the right shoulder of Daemen goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) to lift the Skyhawks to a 2-1 victory in a Thursday matinee held at Williamsville South High School.

With the loss, Daemen women's soccer is now 5-4-0 and 4-1-0 in East Coast Conference play and now look to regroup after having their winning streak end at four consecutive games (19 total days.) A victory would have been their fifth straight win, tying the longest winning streak in program history. This record was set after the Wildcats won their first five contests to kick off an eventual historic 2019 season (11-4-3 overall.)

With the victory, Stonehill improves to 4-6-1 overall and recorded their first victory since a 1-0 win over Le Moyne on Sept. 18. The Skyhawks were 0-4-1 over their last five contests prior to their meeting with Daemen today.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stonehill recorded the first goal of the afternoon when top scorer Camryn Thompson found the back of the net, unassisted, in the 19th minute to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. This marked the 21st career goal and 50th career point for the veteran forward. Daemen then responded a short time later. In the 34th minute, senior midfielder Katelyn Sidoti (Rochester, N.Y.) connected off a solid pass from sophomore midfielder Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) to tie the game at 1-1 – her first career goal with Daemen. Daemen then maintained possession over the last first minutes to keep the score at 1-1 heading into the break.
  • In what was appearing to be the first overtime contest for Daemen this season, Stonehill had other plans. After a shot from Abi Murphy had been blocked seconds prior, freshman Karleigh Schultz scored her first career goal with the Skyhawks with 89 seconds remaining in regulation time. Meghan Lord was credited for the assist as Schultz's shot sailed just over the right shoulder of DeLappi to secure the 2-1 victory.
  • Stonehill outshot Daemen, 21-14, including 14 shots on goal in the contest. The teams went step-for-step in the first half, as Stonehill out-edged Daemen by just one shot in the opening 45 minutes of play (10-9.)
  • Daemen had five shots on goal in today's loss. Along with Sidoti's goal, veterans Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) recorded two shots on net apiece.
  • Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) kept rolling as she established a new career-high 11 saves in her ninth consecutive start of the season (13th career start.) This surpassed DeLappi's previous career-best of seven saves which came in Daemen's 2-0 loss versus St. Rose on March 27, 2021.

GAME NOTES
  • Today was the first all-time meeting between Daemen and Stonehill, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. Following today's loss, Daemen is now historically 1-9-1 when facing opponents from the NE-10.
  • Today marked the 60th career appearance and 41st career start for defender Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) The fifth-year player has played a significant role in the program's success in recent years and is one of 10 returning players who were part of the NCAA Tournament team in 2019 and finished 11-4-3 overall – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015-present.) Meyer recorded her eighth career goal in Daemen's 3-1 victory over then nationally-ranked Molloy on Oct. 2 and also has seven career assists (23 career points.)
  • In what was her 20th career appearance and sixth career start (fourth this season), Sidoti scored her first career goal in the 34th minute. Sidoti previously recorded her first career point with the blue-and-white via an assist in Daemen's 4-0 win versus rival Roberts Wesleyan on Sept. 29.
  • By assisting on Sidoti's goal, Zeitz recorded her second assist of the season and career. Zeitz previously joined the scoresheet in this category in Daemen's 9-0 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) on Sept. 26
  • Amato made her fourth appearance and start in 2021 and was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season. Amato was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 4 following her two-goal performance against Roberts Wesleyan on Sept. 29 and recording her first career assist against Molloy on Oct. 2. Amato currently has 15 career points (seven goals) in eight career appearances.
  • Since Stranahan's second half goal in a 3-1 loss at St. Anselm on Sept. 15, Daemen has now outscored opponents, 21-7.
  • Including today's contest, Daemen is now 1-4-0 this season in games when not recording the first goal. The lone win came against then nationally-ranked Molloy, 3-1, on Oct. 2. Four of Daemen's five wins to date have come after scoring first.
  • Daemen has now netted 23 goals from 11 different players and 13 players have recorded at least one point (team total of 64.)
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • This marked the ninth of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
