Men’s Soccer Falls To St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-0

Winless streak extended to five straight contests

AMHERST, N.Y. – In sports, it only takes a play or two to swing the entire momentum of a contest. Unfortunately, Daemen men's soccer found themselves on the wrong end of big opportunities Saturday afternoon.

A goal scored in the third minute of regulation time sparked the momentum for the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, who walked away with a 4-0 victory over the host Wildcats in an East Coast Conference matchup at Karrer Field. Junior forward Jorge Umana scored two goals in the second half to help the Spartans pull away with the victory.

With the loss, Daemen men's soccer drops to 2-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in East Coast Conference play and have now lost five straight contests (four straight shutouts) since a 4-1 victory at D'Youville on Sept. 18.

With the victory, St. Thomas Aquinas improves to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in ECC play. Today was also the Spartans' fourth straight win, who entered the day tied for third with Bridgeport in the ECC standings.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the third minute of play, junior backer Ryan Collins scored in the third minute from close range off a pass from senior midfielder Leonardo Osawa to give the visiting Spartans a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 24th minute, a goal from the team's top scorer Anthony Bolivar Sanchez extended STAC's lead to 2-0 off an assist from Umana. This was Bolivar Sanchez's eighth goal of the season. The score would stand at 2-0 for the remainder of the first half.
  • Umana then scored the final two goals for the Spartans in an almost 13-minute span. The junior forward scored his first goal of the day unassisted in the 44th minute to extend STAC's lead to 3-0. Then, in the 57th minute, off an assist from Bolivar Sanchez, Umana found the back of the net again for the eventual 4-0 final score.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Daemen in the contest, 18-10, and recorded nine shots on goal. Daemen, however, out-edged STAC in corner kicks, 4-3.
  • Daemen midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded the team's lone shot on goal in the contest.
  • Graduate student and goalkeeper Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.) recorded four saves in his season debut for the Wildcats. Today marked Lecceadone's first start of the season and 17th of his Daemen career.
