Wildcats Fall In Seesaw Season Opener

Ivy & Titus notch double-doubles in losing effort

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - In a game that featured four lead changes and seven ties (all in the second half), #20/#8 Daemen found itself on the bitter end of 75-70 defeat to Saint Anselm in the first regular season game of the 2021-22 season played this evening at the Voller Athletic Center as part of the Redhawks Classic hosted by Roberts Wesleyan.

Saint Anselm led by as many 13 points in the first half, but Daemen battled back to make it a four-point game (36-32) at halftime, and took their first lead of the contest on an Autumn Buchsenschutz (Port Allegany, Pa.) jumper to start the fourth quarter. The Wildcats took a 67-63 lead into the final media timeout of the game, but were held without a field goal over the final 4:50 as Saint Anselm closed with a 12-3 run in crunch time.

The Hawks regained the lead at 71-69 on a layup by Liv Robles with just 1:23 to play. The Wildcats misfired on back-to-back three-pointers and surrendered free throws at the other end as Saint Anselm built a two-possession lead. Buchsenschutz split a pair of free throws to pull the Wildcats back within 73-70, but Robles converted a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to essentially put the game out of reach.

The game featured incredible free throw shooting as the teams combined to shoot 41-for-45 (91%). Daemen finished 20-for-22 in their best performance from the charity stripe since making 13-of-14 in a win over Bridgeport on Feb. 7, 2020.

It was a highly anticipated matchup of teams with high expectations this season. Daemen is picked to win the East Coast Conference with 13 players returning from their 2020-21 team that went 14-3 and advanced to the Elite Eight. Saint Anselm was picked third in the Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division preseason coaches' poll. Tonight's game was the first for Saint Anselm in some 614 days. The Hawks opted out of the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Sophomore guard Gabby Turco enjoyed a collegiate debut more than a year in the making as she paced a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Hawks. Turco made five field goals and canned 7-of-8 from the free throw line, finishing with 19 points, four assists and four steals.
  • Senior guard Peyton Steinman, a First-Team All-NE-10 pick for the 2019-20 season, hit a pair of three-pointers and totaled 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.
  • Robles shot 50% from the field (4-for-8) and scored 13 points off the bench, while Macy Spinks chipped in with 11 points.
  • Senior forwards Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) each recorded double-doubles to lead the Wildcats. Ivy shot 7-for-11 from the field and totaled 20 points - one shy of her career-high - while also grabbing 12 boards. It marked the second double-double of her career. Titus scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and finished with 11 rebounds. The ECC Preseason Player of the Year has now recorded 18 double-doubles in her career.
  • Redshirt senior guard Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) made her official return to the lineup after missing the final nine games last season with an injury. Filbert logged a team-high 37 minutes and scored seven of her 10 points from the charity stripe.
  • Freshman guard Sydney Hvizdzak (Little Valley, N.Y.) chipped in nine points off the bench in her official collegiate debut.

GAME NOTES
  • Daemen is ranked in both Division II national polls for the first time at a season's outset during the program's NCAA era (2015-present). The Wildcats are No. 20 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association top-25 poll and No. 8 in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America national media poll.
  • Saint Anselm boasts five consecutive winning seasons. Head coach Corey Boillard has led the Hawks to a 61-29 record, two NCAA tournament berths and the 2019 East Region championship during his five-year tenure.
  • It marks the sixth time in the last seven seasons that Daemen has opened by participating in a Roberts Wesleyan-hosted tournament. The Wildcats are now 7-4 in those tournament games dating back to the 2015 season.
  • Tonight's game marked just the eighth time in the last 46 games that Daemen has allowed more than 65 points. The Wildcats, who ranked third nationally in both field goal percentage defense (.325) and scoring defense (51.6) last season, have gone 35-3 when allowing 65 points or less in that span, and just 2-6 when opponents breach the 65-point barrier.
  • Titus has now scored in double figures in 49 of 74 career games. She needs just 26 points to become the 27th member of the program's 1,000 Point Club.
  • Filbert's output this evening included the 1,100th point of her career. She ranks 20th in program history with 1,106 points.
  • Ivy has started 18 straight games and is producing 9.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest in that span. Her production has increased dramatically after averaging 2.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game during her first two collegiate seasons.
