Wildcats Upended By Nationally Ranked Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - Coming off a COVID-19-related pause in team activities and playing their third straight game against a nationally ranked opponent, the Daemen men's basketball team found itself on the bitter end of an 85-63 final score, falling to #12/#15 Mercyhurst in non-conference action at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center this evening.

The Wildcats, who had been idle since a 69-66 loss to #3 West Texas A&M on Halloween night, dropped to 1-3 on the season after suffering their third straight defeat. It marks the first three-game slide for the Wildcats since the 2016-17 season.

Mercyhurst, which returns 12 players from their 2020-21 team that finished 12-1, stayed unbeaten this season at 3-0.  All three wins have been by double-figure margins.

Despite playing without starting guards Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) and Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.), Daemen showed no signs of rust early on, storming out of the gates to open up a 24-9 lead just over eight minutes into the game. Mercyhurst responded with an extended run of their own, outscoring Daemen 25-2 in a nearly nine-minute span. A three-pointer by Ryan Bradley (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) finally got the Wildcats back on track, but Mercyhurst took a 38-33 lead into halftime. The Wildcats committed 12 first-half turnovers resulting in 20 Laker points in the period.

Daemen's turnovers troubles continued into the second half, committing 11 more miscues. Mercyhurst, which had just four turnovers in the game, ended with a 41-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Daemen trailed 46-41 following a layup by All-American center Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) at the 16:50 mark, but a three-pointer by MU's MiyKah McIntosh sparked a 9-0 Laker run that put the hosts firmly in control. The Wildcats never got back within a single-digit deficit for the duration of the contest.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • McIntosh was stellar throughout and paced a quintet of double-figure scorers for Mercyhurst. He shot 7-for-15 from the field, 4-for-8 from three-point range and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe, finishing with 24 points to go with five boards.
  • Aidan Reichert came off the bench to score 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Steve Cannady, Cameron Gross and Michael Bradley finished with 12 points apiece. Mercyhurst enjoyed 51% field goal shooting (32-for-63).
  • Sischo returned to his dominant form despite the loss, finishing with a season-high 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds. It marked the 63rd double-double of his career and he's now scored 10+ points in 69 of his last 70 games. Sischo also passed Justin Reyes for second on the East Coast Conference's all-time rebounding list today. Already the ECC's all-time leading scorer, Sischo has totaled 2,294 points and 1,151 rebounds in 108 career games.
  • Sean Fasoyiro (Houston, Texas) was the only other Daemen player in double figures, totaling 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Bradley, who made his first career start, chipped in with nine points and seven boards.

Daemen returns to action next Tuesday, November 23 when they open East Coast Conference play by visiting league newcomer Staten Island for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
