Wildcats Dial Long Distance During Win Over Rival Redhawks

Daemen Connects On 18-of-32 Triples During 86-43 Rout Of Roberts Wesleyan

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College connected on 18-of-32 three-point attempts en route to an 86-43 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.

It marked the 2021-22 East Coast Conference opener for both teams. Daemen, which is ranked ninth in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll, improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the ECC. The Redhawks dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The game was a rematch of both the 2021 ECC Tournament championship game and the 2021 NCAA Division II East Regional championship game. RWC prevailed in the ECC Tournament game, 59-53, while the Wildcats answered with a 58-40 win in the NCAA Tournament to claim its first ever NCAA Regional championship. Daemen has now prevailed in nine of the last 10 meetings between the two long-time rivals, and the Wildcats now own a 49-25 edge in the all-time series.

The 43 point margin of victory ranks as the largest margin of victory in the series since the two programs transitioned to NCAA Division II status—topping the previous high of 35 points during an 83-48 Daemen victory last February. It also marked the seventh time in the last eight meetings between the two schools that Daemen has held the Redhawks to less than 50 points.

Daemen opened the game with a three-pointer by redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) and the hosts later opened up a 12-points lead, 18-6, following three unanswered triples—two by freshman Sydney Hvizdzak (Little Valley, N.Y.)) and one by Filbert. The hosts took a 20-8 lead into the second quarter and the lead was up to 22 points, 35-13, after senior Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) connected on a three-pointer midway though the quarter. The hosts would make 10 three-pointers in the first half and take a 46-22 lead into the break. Roberts Wesleyan came no closer than 24 points, 57-33, during the second half.
