Second Half Run Sparks Wildcats Past Upset-Minded Saints

Sischo Nets 31 Points And Moves Closer To Daemen's All-Time Scoring Mark

AMHERST, N.Y. - Senior All-America Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) powered his way to 31 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 102-77 victory over D'Youville College tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. Daemen evened its record to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference. ECC newcomer D'Youville dropped the 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.

The 25-point victory was not as easy as it appeared for the host Wildcats. Daemen led by just five points (62-57) midway through the second half, when the hosts took control with a 19-3 run.

It marked the first meeting between the two teams since January 22, 2004. It also marks the teams' first-ever meeting as ECC foes and the first of three contests they'll play this season. The Wildcats remained unbeaten (7-0) in the all-time series with D'Youville.


IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Sischo, who entered the game as the NCAA Division II scoring leader, registered his fourth double-double of the season and his second career game with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. He is now averaging 32.3 points and 15.3 rebounds per game. His 21 boards were just two shy of tying his career high (23) he posted against Molloy College on Feb. 16, 2018. He connected on 11-of-17 shots overall and was 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. He has now totaled  51 career double-doubles.
  • Senior guard Kyle Harris (Buffalo, N.Y.) drilled four three-pointers and finished with a career-high 22 points. The Erie Community College product connected on 7-of-15 shots and also grabbed six rebounds.
  • Graduate transfer Sean Fasoyiro (Houston, Texas) scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game and contributed a career-high 18 points. He also added seven rebounds and four assists.
  • Sophomore Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) drilled a couple clutch three-pointers in the second half and finished 3-for-4 from long range and totaled a season-high nine points, 
  • Freshman Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) came close to recording his second-straight double-double and finished with eight points, nine rebounds and a season-high five assists.
  • Redshirt senior guard Grant Beyer and freshman guard Mason Putnam paced the Saints. Beyer scored 16 points in the first and finished with five three-pointers and 21 points, Putnam was an efficient 7-of-12 from the field and totaled 18 points and three assists.


PERIOD-BY-PERIOD SUMMARY
First Half (Daemen 47, D'Youville 40) -
Daemen scored nine of the first 11 points in the game, and the hosts led by eight points (20-12) when the Saints scored seven unanswered points and made it a one point game (20-19) following a layup by junior guard Latrell Butler with 9:15 left in the half. D'Youville took a 23-22 lead after Beyer canned two free throws a minute later, but a 21-7 run by Daemen turned the tide. Back-to-back three-pointers by Harris and Mason capped the run and gave the hosts a 43-30 lead with just over two minutes to play in the half. A 10-4 run down the stretch by the Saints—which included a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Beyer—cut the lead in half and Daemen took a 47-40 lead into halftime.

Second Half (Daemen 55, D'Youville 37) - The teams traded buckets early in the second half and the Daemen lead was five points, 62-57, when a three-pointer by Salzberg started the hosts on its decisive 19-3 run. Sischo scored eight points during the run and a triple by freshman Tyler Hind (Randolph, N.Y.) with 7:15 left capped the run and gave the Wildcats an 81-60 lead. The Saints came no closer than 15 points (85-70) down the stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Daemen shot 35-of-79 (44%) from the field overall and established season-highs for three-pointers made (11) and attempted (38) in a game. The Wildcats cashed in at the charity stripe, make 21-of-25 attempts.
  • D'Youville shot 15-for-34 (44%) from the field in the first half and finished 28-for-68 (41%) overall. The Saints made six three-pointers in the first half, but cooled off considerably over the final 20 minutes and finished 9-of-25 from downtown overall. The visitors went 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.
  • Daemen finished with a commanding 57-33 edge in total rebounds.The Wildcats collected 17 offensive boards, which led to a 22-2 advantage in second chance points.  The hosts also posted a sizable advantage in points in the paint (46-24) and fast break points (20-0).


GAME NOTES

  • Daemen scored over 100 points for the first time since a 103-59 win at Mercy College last year. (Dec. 13, 2019).
  • Daemen attempted 38 three-pointers tonight, which ranks as the most in a game for the Wildcats since they put up 39 triples in a 108-63 win over LIU Post on Feb. 15, 2019.
  • Tonight's game was the first of three meetings between the Wildcats and Saints this season.
  • The win was Daemen's 53rd straight when reaching the 90-point plateau. Since the start of the 2009-10 season, Daemen is 83-2 when scoring 90 or more points. Their last loss when scoring 90 or more points came January 7, 2014 at Dominican (98-93, overtime). 
  • Today's game was the third of 12 on the schedule for Daemen during this unprecedented season. All games are subject to change based upon COVID-19 testing results among Daemen's Tier 1 personnel, as well as that of their opponents. Daemen has already had three games postponed due to COVID-19 issues, two of which have been rescheduled. The Wildcats went into a COVID-related pause in team activities from Jan. 15-24. 
  • Daemen is not ranked in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America East Region media poll for the first time in 35 weeks, a span that dates back to December 2017. 
  • Daemen totaled 57 rebounds tonight and registered 50 rebounds in a 93-86 win over Roberts Wesleyan College Monday night. It marks the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Wildcats have posted 50 or more rebounds in back-to-back games.
  • Sischo, a consensus All-American, continues to leave his mark on the Daemen record book. He has now racked up 1,949 points and 967 rebounds in 93 career games. He stands as the only player in program history with at least 1,800 points and 900 rebounds. Already the program's all-time leader in field goals (773), he passed Brian Montanaro (1,920 points) for second all-time in career points tonight and now stands just 14 points shy of replacing Rob Robinson (1,962) as the program's all-time leading scorer. He also ranks fourth in Daemen history for career rebounds. 
  • Sischo has also moved up among the East Coast Conference all-time leaders in career points. Tonight, he surpassed Brent Welton of Philadelphia University (1,931) to move into seventh place on the ECC's all-time scoring list. In addition, Sischo ranks second in career field goals and seventh in career rebounds among the ECC's all-time leaders. 
  • Sischo has recorded eight straight double-doubles and 10 straight 20-point games dating back to last season. He also extended his personal streak of double-figure scoring to 55 consecutive games. Sischo has scored 10 or more points in 87 of his 93 career games. 
  • Fasoyiro has now reached double figures in all four games this season and is averaging 15.0 points per game.
  • Daemen was hit hard by graduation, losing four starters who each surpassed 1,000 points in their respective careers. Only Sischo, Harris, Fasoyiro and redshirt junior forward Ziv Basden started the season with more than 25 college games under their belt. Six of Daemen's 12 players are either freshmen or sophomores. Eight Daemen players have exercised their right to opt out of the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.
