MINEOLA, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's bowling team will compete for an East Coast Conference championship, but it'll be in a different scenario than originally planned. After earning the No. 2 seed in the ECC Championships following yesterday's round robin slate, the Wildcats advanced with a megamatch victory in the tournament semifinals, but the event's climax was postponed following a health emergency unrelated to COVID-19 within Roberts Wesleyan's team travel party. Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan will work with the conference office to select a mutually agreed upon date and location to resume their championship match.
Daemen opened the day by defeating third-seeded Caldwell in the tournament semifinals. Playing the megamatch format that includes a best-of-three series (team traditional, Baker total pinfall, Baker best-of-seven), Daemen swept the Cougars in the first two matches to advance. The Wildcats scored an 838-790 victory in the traditional team match, followed by a 933-854 win in a Baker total pinfall format.
Seniors Katlyn Newberry (Rochester, N.Y.) and Adrianna Pencek (Dunkirk, N.Y.) led the way in the traditional match, rolling rounds of 193 and 192 respectively. They were backed up by sophomores Paige Bartosz (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.) and classmate Alex Hasiotis (Rochester, N.Y.). Bartosz rolled a 165; Nowak rolled a 147; and Hasiotis rounded out the group with a 141.
With the two victories counting separately on Daemen's record, the Wildcats improved to 6-11 this season. Daemen just resumed play last week following a 368-day hiatus between matches.
