Wildcats Sweep Saints To Remain Unbeaten

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's volleyball team remained unbeaten on the year following a 3-0 victory over cross-town rival D'Youville College tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.

Daemen improved to 7-0 this season and extended its winning streak to nine straight matches dating back to March 6, 2020. It marks the longest winning streak in the brief three-year history of the program.

It also marked Daemen's second win in as many matches against D'Youville this season. Daemen had previously swept the Saints at D'Youville in the season-opener on Feb. 20. D'Youville dropped to 1-3 on the year.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Sophomore Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) equaled his career-high for kills in a match (9) which he set earlier this year during a win over Medaille College. Couzens committed just one hitting error in 11 attempts and finished with a .727 hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore Matthew Garry (Depew, N.Y.) added a season-high eight kills on just 13 attempts and also totaled a career-high eight digs.
  • Sophomore Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) led all players with 21 assists.
  • Freshman Josh Roy led the Saints with eight kills and three digs, while junior Anthony Dean handed out a team-high 16 assists.

SET-BY-SET SUMMARY

Set One (DC 25, DYC 11) – Daemen scored the first four points of the set and later took a 9-2 lead following a kill by sophomore Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.). The Saints answered with three-straight points to cut the lead to four points, but Daemen regained control with a 13-4 run. Back-to-back service aces by sophomore Parker Wade (Portland, Ore.) capped the run and gave the Wildcats a commanding 22-9 lead.

Set Two (DC 25, DYC 12) – The Wildcats once again jumped out to an early lead (7-1) and the hosts later took a 16-6 lead following a kill by Couzens. The Saints scored four of the next five points, but Daemen regrouped and closed out the set with an 8-2 run.

Set Three (DC 25, DYC 21) – The teams traded runs early on and the set was tied at 12-12 when D'Youville ran off four unanswered points to take a 16-12 lead. The D'Youville lead was 17-14 when Couzens sparked a 5-1 run that gave the hosts a 19-18 lead. Couzens totaled three kills during the spurt. The Wildcats later took a 22-20 lead following a kill and service ace by Garry. The Saints pulled to within a point following a service error by Garry, but Daemen closed out the set and the match with a kill by Wade, a kill by Couzens and a D'Youville error.

MATCH NOTES
