AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.
Daemen improved to 8-0 this season and extended its winning streak to 10 straight matches dating back to March 6, 2020. It marks the longest winning streak in the brief three-year history of the program.
It also marked Daemen's second win in as many matches against SJFC this season. Daemen previously outlasted the Cardinals 3-2 at SJFC on March 6.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Junior middle hitter Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) turned in his most impressive effort of the season, as he racked up a team-high 11 kills, five total blocks and three digs. Moffitt committed just two hitting errors in 16 attempts and finished with a .563 hitting percentage.
- Senior Robert Patzer (Liverpool, N.Y.) played in three of the four sets and totaled seven kills and five digs.
- Sophomore Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.), who equaled his career-high for kills in a match (9) during a 3-0 win over D'Youville on Monday night, totaled six kills and four blocks tonight.
- Sophomore Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) led the Wildcats in both assists (22) and digs (7), while junior Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) added 15 assists and four digs.
- Freshman Jake Baker led the Cardinals with 14 kills, while junior Dylan Urbanski handed out a game-high 30 assists.
SET-BY-SET SUMMARY
Set One (SJFC 31, DC 29) – A tightly played set one featured 15 ties and five lead changes. Daemen trailed 8-7 early in set one, before the Wildcats put together a 4-1 run and took an 11-9 lead following a kill by Patzer. SJFC scored four of the next six points to even the set at 13-13, and the Cardinals later took an 18-16 lead. The Cardinals took a 22-19 lead following back-to-back Daemen attack errors, but the Wildcats regrouped following a time out and eventually tied the set at 23-23 following a kill by Moffitt. The teams then traded points and the set was tied at 29-29 when the Cardinals got back-to-back kills to secure the 31-29 win.
Set Two (DC 25, SJFC 15) – The Wildcats held an 8-7 lead early in set two when the hosts seized control with a 12-3 run. A kill by sophomore Parker Wade (Portland, Ore.) capped the run and gave the Wildcats a commanding 20-10 lead. SJFC scored the next two points, before the Wildcats outscored the Cardinals 5-3 to secure the win.
Set Three (DC 25, SJFC 12) – The Wildcats took control early in set three, as the Wildcats scored eight of the first 10 points and later took a 20-10 lead following a service ace by freshman Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.). The lead was 21-12 when the hosts closed out the set with four unanswered points.
Set Four (DC 25, SJFC 23) – The Wildcats held a 15-13 lead in set four, when the Cardinals put together a 6-1 run and opened up a 19-16 lead. Daemen responded with four straight points, but the Cardinals bounced back and scored four of the next five points to take a 23-21 lead. Three straight Daemen kills by sophomore Matthew Garry (Depew, N.Y.), Milligan and Moffitt gave the Wildcats a 24-23 lead, and the hosts secured the set and the match following a SJFC attack error.
MATCH NOTES
- Daemen's program is in its third season of existence. After posting a 6-17 overall record in their inaugural 2019 season, the Wildcats doubled their win total in 2020, finishing 12-7 overall before the final 10 matches were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The Wildcats current 10-match winning streak surpasses the prior program record of seven consecutive wins set last season. All seven wins came during the month of February (2020). Daemen has won 17 of its last 19 matches.
- Daemen was ranked second in the Off the Block Independent Teams Preseason Poll which was released in late December.
- The Wildcats return 13 players who have been with the program for at least a year, including four juniors who came in with the program's inception.
- St. John Fisher is a member of NCAA Division III and the United Volleyball Conference. The Cardinals return 12 players from their 2020 team that posted a 15-4 record before their final nine regular season matches were shelved by the pandemic. The Cardinals are the No. 12 ranked team in the latest NVA/AVCA Division III coaches' poll and were coming off impressive wins over No. 2 New Paltz on Saturday.
