Women's Soccer Takes Down D'Youville In Saturday Rematch, 5-0

Three-goal first half leads Wildcats to second straight win

AMHERST, NY – Saturday afternoon, Daemen women's soccer returned to Karrer Field for the first time in three weeks, this time hosting D'Youville. And similar to how things played out last Sunday in Buffalo between these teams the Wildcats once again found scoring opportunities in the early stages of the first half against the Saints. 
 
Behind three first half goals in almost a six-minute span, the Wildcats defeated their East Coast Conference foe, 5-0, for their second consecutive win of the shortened spring season.

With the victory today, Daemen women's soccer improves to 2-2 while D'Youville dropped to 0-3 overall. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Picking up right where she left on in the first match against the Saints, freshman Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) got Daemen on the scoreboard first when she found the back of the net at the 20:35 mark unassisted to give Daemen a 1-0 lead. Then, just 62 seconds later, Amato scored again off an assist from sophomore forward Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) to give Daemen a 2-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Grichen (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) then scored her second goal in as many games as her unassisted shot at the 26:03 gave Daemen a 3-0 lead at the half. The scoring continued in the second half as junior defenseman Madeline Emmi (Grand Island, N.Y.) scored at the 53:38 mark and freshman midfielder Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) scored in the 72nd minute to conclude Daemen's five-goal performance.
  • Daemen outshot D'Youville, 35-2 in the contest and outedged the Saints in corner kicks, 6-0.
  • Amato once again paced the team in shots on goal with three while Grichen, Zeitz, Emmi, Scalisi, Aryana Dreyer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Faye Panagopoulos (Kenmore, N.Y.) recorded two shots on goal each.
  • Senior goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) made her second start and third appearance of the season and appeared in the first half of the contest. She was then relieved by sophomore Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) for the second half of play.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday marked the fourth of five contests on the abbreviated spring schedule which runs through May 2. The Wildcats' 2020 season had been delayed to the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Now with multi-goal performances in consecutive games, Amato became the first Daemen player to accomplish the feat since Jamie Boyar did so twice in the 2019 season. Boyar scored two goals apiece in the Urbana (Sept. 6) and Mansfield (Sept. 8) contests. Boyar then recorded another set of multi-goal games when she scored twice against Goldey-Beacom (Sept. 14) and a hat trick versus Nyack (Sept. 18.).
  • Amato is also the first Daemen freshman with at least two multi-goal games since Kacey Bougard in 2010. 
  • Daemen now leads D'Youville 4-0 in the all-time series. This was only their second showdown since Daemen's 8-0 victory on Sept. 27, 2007.
  • The victory was Daemen's first as the home team since a 7-0 victory against Lincoln University on Nov. 2, 2019 (held at Williamsville South High School) and their first at Karrer Field since a 1-0 win hosting Mery College on Sept. 28, 2019.
  • Daemen returns 17 players from their 2019 team, including six who started at least 10 games. The Wildcats finished with an 11-4-3 record in 2019, their most wins in a single season since 2012 (11-9).  

ON THE HORIZON
Daemen concludes their spring season when they host long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan at Karrer Field on May 2 with kickoff slated for 12 p.m.
