Wildcats Blank D'Youville In Non-Conference Affair

Daemen's third shutout win over the Saints this season

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen women's tennis team snapped a three-match slide and jumped back over the .500 mark this season following a 7-0 shutout victory over visiting D'Youville this afternoon at the Williamsville South High School courts. It marked the Wildcats' third shutout victory over the Saints this season. Today's match was a non-conference meeting between the two East Coast Conference affiliates.

Daemen, which was coming off a tight 4-3 loss at Edinboro yesterday, improved to 4-3 this season, while the Saints dropped to 0-6. D'Youville is in the first of a three-year transition from NCAA Division III to Division II.

The Wildcats got things started by sweeping through doubles play. Senior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) needed just 25 minutes to dispatch of D'Youville's Julia Clapper and Taylor Nash in a 6-0 whitewash on the first doubles court. Stasiuk and Rubio improved to 5-2 as a pair this season with all seven matches coming at the top of the Wildcats' doubles lineup.

Junior Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and freshman Kayla Nguyen (Poway, Calif.) followed suit with a 6-2 win in second doubles, taking down Faith Falkowski and Allison Meissner. Similarly, it was a 6-2 win in third doubles for sophomores Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Hannah Pagano (Goshen, N.Y.) over Taylor-Anne Austin and Katelyn Hoover. Schayes and Pagano are a perfect 5-0 when paired together this season.

As the match shifted to singles play, the Wildcats continued to excel:
  • Rubio improved to 5-2 this season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Clapper at the top of the lineup.
  • Stasiuk was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in second singles over Falkowski, improving to 6-1 this season. It also marked her 65th career win (combined singles/doubles) and now stands just two singles wins shy of becoming only the fourth player in program history to reach 40.
  • Nguyen, who returned to the lineup yesterday after missing last weekend's road trip, moved to 4-1 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 over Meissner.
  • Otis won her fourth singles match over Nash by a 6-0, 6-2 final.
  • Schayes kept pace with Stasiuk for the team lead in singles wins, improving to 6-1 with her 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Austin in fifth singles.
  • Pagano's 6-4, 6-4 win over Katrina Whipple in sixth singles made it a clean sweep for the Wildcats.
Following today's clean sweep, the Wildcats have gone 29-13 in singles matches and 14-7 in doubles matches. If the season were to end today, their singles (.690) and doubles (.667) winning percentages would be program records.

After meeting just one time over the first eight seasons of Daemen's program history, the same two teams will meet again tomorrow - their fourth match of the season. Sunday's match, which gets underway at 5 p.m. at Miller Tennis Center, is a home match for the Saints as well as the teams' third conference meeting of the campaign.
