Women's Tennis Completes Season Sweep Of D'Youville

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Five different players earned wins in both singles and doubles play as the Daemen women's tennis team breezed to a 6-1 victory over D'Youville in an East Coast Conference dual match held at Miller Tennis Center this evening.

It was Daemen's second win over the Saints this weekend. The Wildcats won Saturday's non-conference meeting 7-0. After meeting just once in the first eight seasons of Daemen's program history, the Wildcats and Saints have played four matches this season - all Daemen victories by a combined score of 27-1.

Daemen improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play with today's win. D'Youville fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the league. The Saints are in their first season as members of the ECC as their program transitions to NCAA Division II membership after a long history competing in Division III.

Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.), Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.), Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Hannah Pagano (Goshen, N.Y.) all produced singles and doubles wins today to lead the Wildcats. Three players - Stasiuk, Rubio and Schayes - did not drop a game en route to their 6-0, 6-0 singles wins.

Stasiuk increased her career win total (combined singles/doubles) to 67, inching closer to becoming only the fourth player in team history to reach the 70-win mark. Her 13 combined wins this season are the most for Stasiuk since she posted 17 in her sophomore season. Stasiuk appeared in first singles for the first time this season and defeated DYC's Julia Clapper. It marked her seventh singles win this season (with just one loss) and the 39th of her career. Her singles win came after she had teamed with Pagano on a 6-1 win in second doubles.

Rubio took her second singles match against DYC's Alisson Meissner, improving to 6-2 in singles play this season. She's also 6-2 in doubles matches after teaming today with Ailish McDevitt (Jameville, N.Y.) to win 6-0 on the third doubles court. For McDevitt, it marked her first career win.

Schayes' win in third singles came over the Saints' Faith Falkowski, and it allowed her to keep pace with Stasiuk for the team lead in singles wins. She's now 7-1 in singles matches this season. Schayes also appeared in first doubles for the first time in her career, teaming with Otis on a 6-0 defeat of Clapper and Taylor Nash. Otis added a 6-2, 6-0 win in fourth singles over Taylor-Anne Austin. Now with 10 combined wins this season, Otis is one shy of matching her career-best season.

Pagano added a 6-2, 7-6 win in fifth singles over Nash. She now has 11 combined wins this season.

D'Youville was able to avoid a fourth straight shutout to the Wildcats by getting a 6-0, 6-0 win in sixth singles from Katelyn Hoover.

Daemen's win sets up an important ECC showdown Tuesday as St. Thomas Aquinas, fresh off a 4-3 win over Queens, visits Western New York. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start at the Williamsville South High School courts.
