STAC Tops Wildcats In Penultimate Regular Season Match

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen men's tennis team fell to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in East Coast Conference play following a 5-2 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas at the Williamsville South High School courts late this afternoon.

Sophomore Ben Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up a solid win in first singles, besting STAC's Lennart Lehmann in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Lehmann, a freshman from Dusseldorf, Germany, suffered his first singles loss of the season after opening his collegiate career with five straight wins, including a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 defeat of Queens' Tim Ostheimer - the No. 48 ranked singles player in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II rankings. Davis' win avenged a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Lehmann when the Wildcats and Spartans met at STAC on April 17.

Daemen's second point in the match came in sixth singles where Matthew Gary (Depew, N.Y.) won by default.

STAC opened the match by overcoming a defaulted loss in third doubles with wins on the first and second courts. Kas Roosch and Ivan Laiz were 6-2 winners in the top position, handing Daemen's Davis and Sam Greco (Amherst, N.Y.) just their third setback as a pair this season. With the doubles point still in play, Lehmann and Enej Hasicevic closed out the Daemen duo of Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) in a 6-3 set.

Roosch (6-2, 6-2), Alvaro Barranco (6-1, 6-4), Laiz (7-5, 6-1) and Hasicevic (6-0, 6-3) earned singles wins in the second through fifth positions to seal STAC's dual match victory. The Spartans improved to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Wildcats and Spartans will meet again tomorrow in the regular season finale for each. They are likely to meet again Friday at the Queens Tennis Center in an ECC Championship play-in match.
