Wildcats Shine Under Friday Nights Lights In Season Finale Over D’Youville, 2-0

Wildcats finish unprecedented season with third straight win

BUFFALO, NY – Something special can truly happen under the Friday Night Lights, no matter the sport.

And for Daemen men's soccer, momentum is certainly on their side heading into the off-season following their season finale matchup against East Coast Conference newcomer, D'Youville.

Continuing their trend over the past couple weeks, the Wildcats once more found scoring opportunities at the right time and secured a 2-0 victory against the Saints Friday night at Dobson Field. This was Daemen's third consecutive victory and their longest winning streak since they won four in a row during the 2006 season.

After a slow start following road losses to Gannon and Roberts Wesleyan, Daemen men's soccer turned their season around behind impressive victories against Medaille (2-0 on April 15) and their second duel with RWC (3-1 on April 25) prior to tonight's match.

With the victory tonight, Daemen men's soccer finishes the season with a 3-2 record while D'Youville finished 1-2 overall.

  • After establishing some ground against the Saints in the opening minutes, sophomore Eman Wajed (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored his first goal as a Wildcat in the 15th minute off a pass from freshman Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) and gave Daemen a 1-0 lead. Daemen then scored again in the 59th minute when sophomore Christian Lewin (Bobenheim-Roxheim, Germany) recorded an unassisted goal and extended Daemen's lead to 2-0.

GAME NOTES
  • Having won three games in a row this spring, this was Daemen's longest winning streak as a program since they won four in a row in a span dating from Oct. 23 – Nov. 4, 2006. The fourth win in this stretch was a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame College in the American Mideast Conference Qualifying Tournament held in South Euclid, OH. This came before they bowed out in the NAIA Region IX Tournament following a 4-0 loss to Houghton College on Nov. 7, 2006.
  • The three victories in Spring 2021 were also the most Daemen recorded in a single season since the 2018 campaign (5-12 overall.)
  • Including the goal scored by Montero Guerrero in the 80th minute against RWC on March 27, Daemen finished the season outscoring their opponents, 7-1.
  • Tonight was the fourth all-time meeting between Daemen and D'Youville since the series began in October 2002 and the first overall as members of the East Coast Conference. Daemen now holds an all-time 4-0 record against the Saints and are 3-0 at Dobson Field. This was also the first meeting between the programs since Sept. 11, 2016.
  • Tonight marked the fifth and final contest on the abbreviated spring schedule for Daemen which runs through April 30. The Wildcats' 2020 season had been delayed to the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
