Daemen Falls to Mercyhurst in Home Opener, 4-1

Lundin boots penalty kick before Lakers score four unanswered goals

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The Daemen faithful will have to wait just little bit longer to see the men's soccer team record their first win as the home team in 2021.

After allowing three second-half goals, including two from senior forward Sidney Warden late in the second half, the Wildcats kicked off their slate of home contests this fall with a 4-1 loss against Mercyhurst in a contest held at Williamsville South High School Wednesday morning.

With the victory, Daemen men's soccer drops to 2-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in East Coast Conference play. With the loss, Mercyhurst improves to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in PSAC play.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • For a second consecutive contest, it was Daemen who scored first. After a foul was called on Mercyhurst freshman Nic Munch, Daemen junior midfielder Pontus Lundin (Asmundtorp, Sweden) converted a penalty kick to give Daemen the 1-0 lead. This was the first time Lundin scored in a contest since his last penalty kick goal against Gannon on Oct. 7, 2019. All four of his career goals are via the penalty kick.
  • The Lakers responded Munch scored unassisted in the 36th minute to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.
  • Mercyhurst continued creating and converting scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 63rd minute, sophomore midfielder Dylan Sumner scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from classmate Julius Becker, which gave the Lakers the go-ahead 2-1 lead. Sidney Warden then scored twice in the 73rd and 80th minutes of play for the eventual 4-1 final score. Graduate student and forward Nevado Elliott assisted on both of Warden's goals. Sumner was credited with a secondary assist on Warden's first tally. Goaltender Jonathan Gomes was credited with a secondary assist on Warden's second strike.
  • Mercyhurst outshot Daemen in the contest, 15-9, and recorded nine shots on goal. Additionally, the Lakers out-edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 10-1.
  • Including Lundin's shot on goal that found the back of the net in the 13th minute, Daemen only recorded three shots on goal for the entire contest. Derek Mancuso (Friendship, N.Y.) and Carlos Espana (Madrid Spain) recorded one shot on goal each.
  • Senior goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) was in net for a fifth consecutive start for the Wildcats and recorded five saves in the loss. Today marked the eighth start of his Daemen career. His counterpart, Jonathan Gomes, recorded two saves and his fourth win of the season.

GAME NOTES
  • With the loss, Daemen is now 5-3 in their last eight contests dating back to their three-game winning streak to conclude their COVID-19 abbreviated slate in spring 2021.
  • Today was the first time Daemen allowed four goals in a contest as a program since a 4-2 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on March 27, 2021. This came just four days after the Wildcats scored four goals for the first time since a 4-0 season-finale victory versus St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 27, 2018 at Williamsville South High School. This is also the second time Daemen has allowed multiple goals in a contest this season (2-1 loss at Walsh on Sept. 2.)
  • Today marked the first time Daemen scored off a penalty kick in a contest since Craig Buchanan did so in a 4-2 loss against Bloomsfield on Oct. 29, 2019 at Karrer Field. The Wildcats are 12 for their last 12 penalty kick opportunities. Their last missed penalty kick attempt came against Gannon on Sept. 13, 2016.
  • Since scoring in the 80th minute in this same loss to Roberts Wesleyan on March 27, 2021, Daemen has now outscored their opponents, 15-10.
  • Today marked the first time Lundin scored as a Wildcat since recording the team's lone goal, also off a penalty kick, in a 7-1 at Gannon on Oct. 7, 2019. In what was also his 37th appearance and 34th start, Lundin has now totaled four career goals (all via penalty kick) and nine points.
  • Today was the second all-time meeting between Daemen and Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst leads the all-time series, 2-0, with both wins coming on the campus of Williamsville South High School.
  • Today marked the fifth of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
