Women's Soccer Falls To Goldey-Beacom In Saturday Matinee, 3-1

Wildcats allow two goals in first half, still searching for first win of 2021 campaign

WILMINGTON, DEL. – One game at a time.

That's the mindset Daemen women's soccer is determined to have after finishing their out-of-state road trip to begin their 2021 campaign Saturday afternoon against Goldey-Beacom and now begin their journey home to Main Street.

Behind a two-goal performance from sophomore forward Hanna Clarke in the 40th and 79th minutes plus a goal and an assist from freshman forward Alyssa Ruggieri, the Lightning secured a 3-1 victory over Daemen in a contest held at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field.

With the loss today, Daemen women's soccer dropped to 0-2-0 while Goldey-Beacom moves to 1-1-0 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • For a second consecutive game, Daemen found themselves in a tight defensive matchup in the early stages of the first half before Goldey-Beacom converted on timely scoring opportunities.  In the 23rd minute, Alyssa Ruggieri found the back of the net after receiving a pass from classmate Paulimar Coll to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 40th minute, Hanna Clarke recorded her first goal of the afternoon off a pass from veteran Taylor Owen, which gave GBC a 2-0 lead at halftime. Daemen did cut the deficit, however, in the 65th minute when freshman Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) netted the first goal of her career in the blue-and-white following a cross pass from junior Faye Panagopoulos (Kenmore, N.Y.) The scoring concluded in the 79th minute when Clarke recorded her second goal of the afternoon with Ruggieri credited for the assist.
  • Goldey-Beacom outshot Daemen, 17-8, including nine shots on goal in the contest. The Lightning also out-edged Daemen in corner kicks, 4-2.
  • Including her goal, Diaz had a team-high two shots on goal for Daemen. Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.), Katelyn Sidoti (Rochester, N.Y.), Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) also recorded a shot on goal apiece.
  • Junior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) made her second start of the season and recorded six saves in the loss. Today marked the fourth start of her Daemen career.

GAME NOTES
  • This is the first time Daemen has allowed multiple goals in consecutive contests since their last two meetings against St. Rose – a 4-0 loss in the NCAA Division II Championships East Regional on November 22, 2019 and a 2-0 loss on March 27, 2021, the first game of an abbreviated 2020 schedule that was postponed to spring 2021 due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • Today was only the fourth all-time meeting between Daemen and Goldey-Beacom. This was the first meeting since a 3-1 victory for Daemen on Sept. 14, 2019 at Karrer Field. The series record is now tied at 2-2.
  • With her goal today, Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) becomes the first Daemen freshman to score in a contest since Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) recorded the Wildcats' final goal in the 72nd minute of a 5-0 victory versus D'Youville on April 17, 2021. This contest against the Saints was eventually the final contest completed in Spring of 2021 after the season finale versus Roberts Wesleyan on May 2 was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • Daemen returns 17 players who were on the roster for the unorthodox 2020-21 academic year, including 10 who were part of the Wildcats' NCAA tournament team in 2019 when they finished 11-4-3 – the best season in the program's NCAA era (2015 – present.)
  • This marked the second of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.

ON THE HORIZON
Daemen now returns home to Amherst, NY hoping for their first win of the 2021 campaign when they host the Mercyhurst Lakers of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 PM at Karrer Field.
