AMHERST, N.Y. - The regionally-ranked Daemen College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five-straight games following an 80-43 victory over Queens College today at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.
Daemen has now won seven of its last nine games and improved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in East Coast Conference play. Daemen entered the game ranked seventh in the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll. The Knights dropped to 1-10 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Daemen held a 14-2 lead halfway through the first quarter and took a 24-4 lead into the second quarter. The lead ballooned to 32 points, 41-9, late in the second quarter and the hosts took a 48-15 lead into intermission. Daemen would maintain a comfortable lead throughout the second half.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Freshman Sydney Hvizdzak (Little Valley, N.Y.) connected on 4-of-8 three-pointers and scored a season-high 18 points for the Wildcats in just 18 minutes of action off the bench.
- Senior Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) added 13 points and six rebounds.
- Sophomore Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) scored in double figures for the second time in the last three games and finished with 11 points.
- Sophomore Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) enjoyed her most productive game of the season and totaled 10 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
- Redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
- Sophomore Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) added eight points and a career-high eight assists.
- Freshman guard Aalia Carlson paced the Knights with three three-pointers and 13 points.
GAME NOTES
- The Wildcats shot 44-percent (32-of-73) from the field, while Queens connected on just 16-of-57 (28%) of its shots.
- The three-point line was a big difference in the game, as Daemen made good on 10-of-35 from long range, while the Knights made just 4-of-14 from behind the arc. It marked the fourth time in the last five games that Daemen has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game.
- The Wildcats established season-highs for offensive rebounds (19) and total rebounds (53), and posted a season-low 11 turnovers.
- Daemen registered 23 assists on 32 field goals. It marked the third time in the past five games that Daemen has handed out 20 or more assists in a game (season-high 25 vs. Roberts Wesleyan on 12/9/21).
- Daemen has now won 28-straight home regular-season conference games dating back to the 2017-18 season.
- Daemen has held 45 of its last 54 opponents to 65 points or less, posting a 41-4 record in those games.
- Filbert became the 14th player in program history to score 1,200 career points during today's game. She has totaled 1,202 points, 482 rebounds and 291 assists in 103 career games.
- Titus became the 27th member of Daemen's 1,000-Point Club during a win over Angelo State University earlier this year and has now totaled 1,151 points, 669 rebounds and 138 blocks in 83 career games. She is just the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks.
- Daemen finished with an edge in points off turnovers (23-9), second chance points (19-10) and points in the paint (36-12).
- Daemen has now prevailed in the last six meetings with Queens, but the Knights maintain a 9-6 advantage in the all-time series.
- Daemen is now 58-13 in their last 71 games, a span that dates back to mid January of 2019.
NEXT JUMP BALL
The Wildcats are idle until next weekend when they hit the road for ECC games at St. Thomas Aquinas College (Jan. 21) and Mercy College (Jan. 23).
