Women's Cross Country Finishes Fourth at Canisius Alumni Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Daemen University women's cross country team finished fourth out of 15 teams on a soggy Saturday afternoon at the Canisius Alumni Classic at Buffalo's Delaware Park. 

CANISIUS ALUMNI CLASSIC FULL RESULTS

Sophomore Marcy Colca (Getzville, N.Y.) was the first Wildcat out to cross the finish line this afternoon, placing seventh overall out of 156 runners with a 5K time of 18:43.2. Colca was the only Daemen runner to finish in the top 20. 

As a team, the Wildcats finished fourth out of 15, and the first non-Division I team to finish, with a total of 133 points. Duquesne finished first overall with a team score of 21, placing all five scoring runners in the top ten. Host Canisius finished second with 75 points after placing the second, seventh and ninth place runners, and Buffalo finished third with 109 points. Roberts Wesleyan finished fifth after Daemen with 139 points, followed by St. Bonaventure (140), Geneseo (153), RIT (218), Niagara (232), SUNY-ESF (267) at tenth overall, Canisius Alumni (317), D'Youville (368), Oswego (377), Alfred State (416) and Buffalo State (455). 

Daemen narrowly beats Roberts Wesleyan 133 to 139 in the final meet before the East Coast Conference Championships. 

The Wildcats have two weeks off before the compete in the conference championships in Rochester, N.Y.  on November 5. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen had a total of 13 runners compete today.
  • Colca's seventh-place time of 18:43.2 ranks second in her career 5K times, three seconds slower than her PR of 18:40.8 that she earned at the Daemen Alumni Invitational on Sept. 10. 
  • Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) finished second on the team and 21st overall with a time of 19:06.7. 
  • Freshman Patsy Oberholzer (Greece, N.Y.) ran in her second collegiate 5K, placing 27th overall with a personal record time of 19:24.7 to finish third on the team. Oberholzer shaved 16 seconds off her previous 5K PR (19:40.2) that she earned at the Daemen Alumni Invitational. 
  • Senior Courtney Merrill (Speedway, Ind.) placed 41st overall with a time of 19:39.2. 
  • Junior Camryn Bailey (Geneva, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats, posting a time of 19:54.1 to finish 49th overall. 
  • Redshirt senior Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and sophomore Emma Cain (Lockport, N.Y.) figured into the race, finishing 57th and 60th overall. Thomas posted a time of 20:02.8, with Cain finishing just four seconds behind at 20:06.8.
  • Juniors Haley Hinds (Blossvale, N.Y.) and Emma Grzebinski (West Seneca, N.Y.) crossed the finish line at 66 and 69. Hinds finished at 20:10.4, while Grzebinski finished at 20:19.0. 
  • Freshmen Madeline Straub (Olean, N.Y.), Hayley Pizur (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Kennedy Pino (Spencerport, N.Y.) ran in the second 5K of their collegiate careers today. Straub placed 94th at 21:06.2, Pizur finished 121st with a 22:34.9 and Pino posted a PR time of 23:06.9 to finish 129th. 
  • Senior Keagan Carroll (Woodbridge, P.A.) rounded out the Daemen runners, placing 140th with a time of 24:23.6.
