AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games following a 1-0 non-conference victory over Slippery Rock University this afternoon at Karrer Field.
Daemen of the East Cast Conference moves to 6-6-3 on the year. Slippery Rock, which is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, is now 5-8-2.
It marked Daemen's first win over a PSAC school since the 2018 season. Daemen was 0-2-1 against PSAC schools this year and had gone 0-14-1 against the league dating back to September of 2018.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first half saw limited scoring chances at both ends of the field, as the teams combined for just six total shots and just two shots on goal.
- The game remained scoreless until the 61st minute when the host Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick following a foul inside the SRU box. Senior midfielder Pontus Lundin (Asmundorp, Sweden) lined up to take the kick and calmly sent a low shot into the lower left corner for his first goal if the season.
- SRU nearly tied the game when it hit the post following a long free kick by senior forward Ramses Minaya in the 67th minute.
- Graduate student Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) registered two of his five saves in the final 12 minutes to secure the win for Daemen and his third shutout of the year.
- Daemen outshot SRU 7-5 in the second half and the hosts finished with a 10-8 edge in total shots. SRU posted a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Sophomore Adam Davies played the first half in net for SRU and did not register a save. Senior Hossam Aly played the second half and recorded tree saves.
GAME NOTES
- The two teams played to a similar 1-0 result last year in Pennsylvania, with SRU claiming the victory.
- Today's win marks the first for Daemen over Slippery Rock. Today marked just the fourth all-time meeting and The Rock had prevailed in the previous three.
- The Wildcats have limited 11 of their 15 opponents to one goal or less and have recorded three shutouts this season.
- Daemen's six wins this year are the most since the Wildcats posted a 7-11-0 record in 2017.
- Seven is the program record for most wins in a season. The Wildcats registered seven wins in 2005, 2006 and 2017.
