Women's Tennis Drops Non-League Match To Division I Niagara

LEWISTON, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team closed its fall regular-season with a 7-0 loss at Division I Niagara University this afternoon on the Niagara campus. Daemen dropped to 3-6 overall, while Niagara picked up its first win of the year and improved to 1-2.

Niagara took two of the three doubles matches to earn the one point as per NCAA Division I/II scoring. Daemen prevailed at No. 1 doubles, as junior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a 6-2 win over juniors Coral Rodriguez and Elena Mayet. No. 2 doubles saw Niagara's Erika Gonzalez and Enrica Favaron post a 6-1 win over sophomore Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and senior Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) of Daemen. Niagara secured the point after junior Jaida Borg and sophomore Mercedes Velasco posted a 6-0 win over Daemen's Ailish McDevitt (Jamesville, N.Y.) and freshman Dania Mehani (Amherst, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles..

Niagara took all six singles matches. Rodriguez defeated Rubio at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while Mayet outlasted Scime at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Rubio and Scime improved to 4-3 in doubles play this year. Scime saw her personal winning streak of four-straight singles matches come to an end. She closes out the fall regular-season with a team-best 9-4 overall record in singles play. Scime, who went 8-9 in singles play last year, already ranks eighth in career singles wins among Daemen's all-time leaders with 17.

UP NEXT
Daemen has earned a bid to the four-team East Coast Conference Championship tournament. Daemen is seeded fourth in the tournament and will face top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinals Friday (Oct. 28) on the campus of Queens College in Flushing, N.Y. The winner advances to Saturday's conference championship match against either second-seeded District of Columbia or third-seeded Queens.
