Wildcats Secure ECC Tournament Bid Following 4-1 Win Over Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) totaled two goals and an assist to lead Daemen University to a 4-1 victory over the College of Staten Island in NCAA Division II women's soccer action this afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park.

Daemen secured the fourth and final bid to the upcoming East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship with the win. The Wildcats will be making their second-straight—and third overall—appearance in the ECC Tournament.

Daemen has now posted three-straight wins and is 4-1-1 over its last six games. The Wildcats improved to 4-9-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the ECC. Staten Island fell to 2-9-2 overall and 2-5-0 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen had several solid scoring chances early in the game, but the game remained scoreless until the 33rd minute when Diaz took a lead pass from senior Faye Panagopoulos (Kenmore, N.Y.) and sent a shot into the upper left corner.
  • The Wildcats finished with a 9-3 edge in shots during the first half and teams entered halftime with Daemen holding a 1-0 lead.
  • Daemen doubled its lead 25 minutes into the second half after Panagopoulos beat CSI goalkeeper Sara Villacres to a lead ball and scored into an open net. It marked the second goal of the year for Panagopoulos, who also scored in a recent win over D'Youville.
  • The Dolphins cut the lead in half just 27 seconds later when Christina Lambraia redirected a cross from Macy-Jones Busch.
  • Diaz gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead in the 75th minute with her second goal of the game off a feed from freshman Kyle Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.).
  • Miranto secured the win when she scored off a pass from Diaz with just over 10 minutes to play.
  • Daemen finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots overall (12-2 in shots on goal).
  • Senior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) went the distance in goal for Daemen and was credited with one save. Villacres made eight saves before giving way to Brianna Dore with just under seven minutes to play.
GAME NOTES
  • Diaz and Miranto are tied for the team lead in goals (4). Diaz has totaled a team-high 10 points.
  • Diaz has totaled all of her goals and points over the past five games, while Miranto has totaled all of her goals and points (9) over the past four games.
  • Today's game marked just the second all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Dolphins. Daemen prevailed in the first ever meeting last year, 3-0.
