AMHERST, N.Y. - A goal by graduate student Jake Bedforth with just 2:43 left in the second half lifted the University of the District of Columbia to a 3-2 victory over Daemen University this afternoon at Karrer Field. It marked the regular season finale for both teams.
Daemen entered the game needing a victory, combined with a Roberts Wesleyan loss at Mercy, to secure its first ever bid to the four-team East Coast Conference Championship tournament. RWU ended up in a 1-1 draw with Mercy, which earned the Redhawks the fourth and final bid.
Daemen capped its most successful season in years with a 7-7-3 overall record and 3-4-1 mark in the ECC. The visiting Firebirds finished 7-7-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the league.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Daemen opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the contest when senior Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) collected the rebound of a shot by graduate student Carlos Espana (Madrid, Spain) and scored from a tough angle 15 yards out.
- The Firebirds evened the game six minutes later following a goal by freshman Alex Gamez.
- Bartlo struck again in the 24th minute when he blasted a shot into the upper right corner from 25 yards out.
- It appeared Daemen would take a 2-1 lead into halftime, but UDC was awarded a corner kick in the finals seconds and freshman Zachary Parker got a solid shot off with just four seconds left in the half and scored into the upper right of the Daemen net.
- The teams battled back and forth in an evenly played second half, but neither team could find the back of the net until Bedforth took a pass from sophomore Santiago Gordillo on the right flank and scored from point blank range into the lower left corner of the Wildcat net.
- UDC finished with a slim 17-15 edge in total shots and both teams put eight shots on goal.
- Graduate student Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) went the distance in goal in his final game as a Wildcat and made five saves.
- Senior Javier Abadia Torres recorded six saves for the Firebirds.
