LANCASTER, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's bowling team won four of its five matches today during opening day action of the Daemen Storm Fall Classic. The two-day event features eight teams and is taking place at Lancaster Lanes.
The host Wildcats sit atop the team standings after day one with a total pin fall of 4,533. D'Youville totaled 4,401 pins and sits in second place, while Walsh (Ohio) is in third place with 4,389 pins. Medaille (4,315) and Saint Vincent (4,314) round out the top five. The remaining three schools include Penn State Behrend (3,957), Pitt-Bradford (3,817) and Hilbert (3,635).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Daemen opened the day with an 931-918 win over D'Youville. Junior Mollie Gizicki (Brighton, Mich.) led the way with a 224, while senior Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.) rolled 182 and graduate student Christina Aldridge (Webster, N.Y.) followed with a 181.
- Daemen then defeated Penn State Behrend 925-821. Gizicki continued her hot start with a 235, which ranked as the highest game by a Daemen player today. Nowak added a 200, while senior Nicole Bergeron (Lima, N.Y.) chipped in with a 182.
- Daemen, which went unbeaten (5-0) at the Grapevine Classic in Erie, Pa. last weekend, saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end following a 879-848 loss Saint Vincent. Nowak rolled a team-high 213 in the loss.
- The Wildcats returned to their winning ways with a 923-844 win over Walsh and closed the day with a 906-751 win over Hilbert. Nowak and fellow senior Paige Bartosz (West Seneca, N.Y.) both bowled a 209 against Walsh, while Gizicki capped her solid day with a 233 against Hilbert. Aldridge posted a 200 in the win over Hilbert.
- Gizicki competed in all five matches and finished with a tournament best 205.8 average. Nowak ranked third among the 54 bowlers with a 190.4 average. Bartosz (176.) and Aldridge (173.2) also ranked among the top-15.
