Wildcats Suffer Exhibition Loss at Division I Buffalo

AMHERST, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Curtis Jones scored 16 points and junior guard Yazid Powell added 14 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to lead the University at Buffalo to a 95-66 victory over Daemen University in an exhibition game played today at Alumni Arena on the UB campus.

It marked the second of two exhibition games against Division I programs the Wildcats will play as they prepare for the start of the 2022-23 season.

Daemen trailed by just three points at the half, 39-36, but the Bulls opened the second half with 14 unanswered points for a 53-36 lead. Daemen scored the next six points to cut the lead to 11, 52-42, but UB mounted a 25-7 run over the next eight minutes to secure the win.


IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Jones and Powell paced a balanced UB attacked that featured four double-digit scorers. Freshman Devin Ceaser contributed 13 points in just 12 minutes off the bench, while freshman center Isaac Jack netted 10 points.
  • Redshirt senior guard/forward Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Newcomer Payton Shumpert (Syracuse, N.Y.), a transfer from Division I Stony Brook, drilled three three-pointers and scored 13 points off the bench. Junior guard Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) added 11 points for the Wildcats.


GAME NOTES

  • UB jumped out to an early 20-9 lead, but Daemen responded with 10 unanswered points and later took a 26-23 lead following a triple by Shumpert with 5:50 to play in the first half.
  • Daemen took its largest lead of the game, 34-30, following a three-pointer by Mason with 2:35 left before the break, but UB closed the half with a 9-2 spurt.
  • Daemen shot 42-percent (25-60) from the field overall and made 8-of-21 from three-point land.
  • UB shot 59-percent overall (40-of-68) and made 6-of-21 from downtown.
     

NEXT JUMP BALL

Daemen is idle until it officially opens the 2022-23 season by hosting the East Region Challenge presented by Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC, Nov. 11-12.
