Women's Basketball Falls To Buffalo 61-51 In Exhibition Game

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team opened up the 2022-23 season with an exhibition game against the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday afternoon. Today's final score of 61-51 is the closest game the Wildcats have played against the Bulls in an exhibition game. UB fifth-year guard Zakiyah Winfield, who came to the Bulls this season after winning a Division II National Championship with Glenville State last season, led all players on the day with 19 points.

Daemen shot 37-percent from the field (19-of-51) and 25-percent from beyond the three (3-of-12).

Today's game was the first of two exhibition games against Division I opponents for the Wildcats. Daemen travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to play D-I powerhouse Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 5.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior transfer Gabby McDuffie (Buffalo, N.Y.) made an immediate impact on the Wildcats this afternoon. She played a team-high 30 minutes, and was the only Wildcat to notch double-digit points, finishing with 13 on the day, as well as four rebounds, one assist and two steals.
  • Freshman Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut today and played a total of 21 minutes. She led the Wildcats defensively, finishing with six rebounds, one block, and one steal.
  • Junior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) played 29 minutes, scored seven points and pulled down three defensive rebounds.

GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats started hot from the jump. UB scored the first points of the game, but after the Bulls took a 4-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the first, the Wildcats then went on a 7-0 run thanks to a three by Matz and back-to-back baskets from McDuffie.
  • Buffalo opened the second quarter on a 9-0 tear. The Wildcats then crawled back from a nine-point deficit to bring the second quarter within three points, and entered halftime down 28-23.
  • In the first half, Daemen shot just 30-percent from the field (9-of-30) and 25-percent from beyond the arc (2-of-8).
  • The Bulls had an 11-point lead halfway through the third, but Daemen went on an 11-4 run late in the quarter. The Wildcats trailed 46-40 going into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • Daemen shot 37-percent from the field (19-of-51) and 25-percent from beyond the three (3-of-12). The Bulls finished 21-of-53 (40-percent) from the field, 3-of-11 (27-percent).
