The event brings together teams from each of the three Division II conferences in the NCAA East region. Daemen is a member of the East Coast Conference, while Pace hails from the Northeast-10 Conference. In the other opening round game, Felician University of the of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference defeated the host Redhawks of the ECC, 80-61. The game between Daemen and Pace was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II Tournament East Region final won by Pace 67-65. Pace entered the game ranked No. 22 in the WBCA Division II Top-25, while Daemen was receiving votes in the same poll. IMPACT PLAYERS Newcomer Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with 17 points. The former Niagara County Community College standout connected on 7-of-9 shots overall and made 3-of-4 from long range. Fifth-year senior Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) just missed a double-double, as she finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Freshman Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut today. She played 23 minutes off the bench and totaled three points, two rebounds and two steals. Graduate student Lauren Hackett led the Setters with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. GAME NOTES Pace took a 12-6 lead with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter, but Daemen closed the frame with six unanswered points and the teams headed to the second quarter knotted at 12-12. The teams traded buckets early in the second quarter and Pace held a 20-19 lead two and a half minutes into the frame, but both teams went scoreless over the next three minutes. Daemen took a 25-20 lead following a bucket by senior Marina Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) with 3:31 left before halftime, but Pace closed the half with a 6-2 spurt and Daemen took a 27-26 lead into the break. Daemen held a 36-30 lead midway through the third quarter and the Wildcats eventually took a 43-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Daemen took the first double-digit lead of the game (46-35) when Emborsky drained her third three-pointer of the game to open the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats later took a 12-point lead, 49-37, after Ivy scored with 6:45 left. Pace managed to cut the lead to six, 51-45, with just over a minute left, but the Setters would come no closer. Daemen shot 46-percent from the field (6-13) during the third quarter and finished 19-of-54 (35%) from the field overall. The Wildcats made 3-of-11 three-pointers and 11-of-16 free throws. Pace connected on just 16-of-54 shots (30%) and made just 5-of-23 from downtown. UP NEXT The tournament continues tomorrow.
