Wildcats Close Out Redhawks Classic With 72-60 Win Over Felician

AMHERST, N.Y. – Graduate student Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) paced a balanced attack with 14 points to lead the Daemen University women's basketball team to a 72-60 victory over Felician University today during second round action of the Redhawks Classic hosted by Roberts Wesleyan University.

The event brings together teams from each of the three Division II conferences in the NCAA East region. Daemen is a member of the East Coast Conference, while Felician hails from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

In the other second round game, Pace University of the of the Northeast-10 Conference defeated the host Redhawks of the ECC, 70-55.

Daemen, which posted a 52-45 win over 22nd-ranked Pace yesterday,  entered the 2022-23 season receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Top-25.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Emborsky, who scored a team-high 17 points in an opening round win over Pace yesterday, went 3-of-5 from three-point land today. The former Niagara County Community College standout connected on 11-of-16 shots overall (6-of-9 from long range ) during the tournament.
  • Senior forward Marina Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) played 19 minutes off the bench and scored a career-high 12 points.
  • Freshman Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) also contributed off the bench for the second-straight day, as she scored 10 points in 15 minutes of action.
  • Junior Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) added eight points, while redshirt junior Alina Estrella (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in five points and a team-high six rebounds.
  • Graduate student Katelyn Andres of Felician led all scorers with 17 points, while redshirt junior Brianna Lee added 14. 
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen outscored the Falcons 13-4 over the first five minutes of the game and the Wildcats would later take a 20-6 lead following layup by junior Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) with 1:17 left in the first quarter
  • The Wildcats took control of the game in the second quarter, as Daemen outscored the Falcons 25-12 during the frame. The Wildcats led by 16 points, 29-13, midway through the second quarter and later took a 19-point advantage, 32-13 following a triple by Emborsky with 4:49 left before halftime. The Daemen lead was 23 points, 45-22, at the break
  • The Wildcats took their largest lead of the game, 50-23, after Pikett converted a conventional three-point play with 8:38 left in the third quarter and Daemen would take a 57-34 lead into the final quarter. Daemen maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
  • Daemen shot 57-percent from the field (8-14) during the decisive second quarter and finished 25-of-56 (45%) from the field overall. The Wildcats made 7-of-18 three-pointers and 15-of-17 free throws. Felician connected on 21-of-56 shots (38%) overall and made just 3-of-13 from downtown. The Falcons went 15-of-26 from the charity stripe.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday when they host Le Moyne College in a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. It will mark the 2022-23 home opener for the Wildcats.
