KENMORE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's bowling won three of its five matches today during opening day action of the Medaille Brunswick Invitational. The two-day event features 10 teams and is taking place at Classic Lanes.
The Wildcats sit in fifth place in the team standings after day one with a total pin fall of 4,385. Tournament host Medaille went 5-0 and totaled 4,597 pins and sits in first place. Mercyhurst (4,579), Walsh (4,566), D'Youville (4,492) and Daemen round out the top five. The remaining five schools include Roberts Wesleyan (4,376), Bryant (4,292), Chestnut Hill (4,289), Pitt.-Bradford (3,622) and Hilbert (3,449).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Daemen opened the day with an 876-838 loss to Bryant. Senior Paige Bartosz (West Seneca, N.Y.) led Daemen with a 188, while senior Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.) rolled a 172.
- Daemen then posted three-straight wins over Pitt.-Bradford (809-727), D'Youville (848-826) and Walsh (1,028-974). The Wildcats capped the day with an 891-862 loss to Mercyhurst, which is ranked eighth nationally in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) DII/DIII Preseason Pol.
- Nowak led the Wildcats to the win over Pitt.-Bradford with a 197.
- Junior Mollie Gizicki (Brighton, Mich.), the reigning ECC Bowler of the Week, posted a team-high 196 against D'Youville, while Nowak chipped in a 187 and graduate student Christina Aldridge (Webster, N.Y.) added a 179.
- Three Daemen bowlers rolled a 200 in the win over Walsh. Bartosz led the way with a 233, which was the highest score by a Daemen bowler today. Aldridge added a 219 and Nowak continued her solid day with a 214. Gizicki contributed a 187 and senior Nicole Bergeron (Lima, N.Y.) rolled a 175 to complete the tournament-best score of 1,028.
- The 1,028 total pins against Walsh was a season high for Wildcats, and the most in a game for Daemen since posting a 1,089-774 win over Kutztown last year during the Wildcat Division II Invitational in New Castle, Del.
- Gizicki rolled a 225 in the loss to Mercyhurst, while Aldridge capped her day with a 179.
- Nowak competed in all five matches and finished with a team-high 188.0 average. Gizicki posted a 184.0 average over five matches, while Aldridge also had a 184.0 average over four matches. Bartosz bowled all five matches and posted a 178.0 average.
