Late Rally Falls Short As Wildcats Drop 70-65 Decision To Queens

AMHERST, N.Y. – Sophomore Sunnie Diamond scored 21 points and senior Tyler Carey added 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to lead Queens College to a 70-65 victory over Daemen University this afternoon in men's basketball action at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. The host Wildcats suffered their second-straight loss and dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the East Coast Conference. Queens evened its record to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the ECC.

Queens snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Wildcats, and also registered its first ever win at Lumsden Gym. The Knights entered today's game 0-9 all time at Daemen.

Daemen entered the game ranked fifth in the East Region by the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA).

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Diamond connected on 8-of-15 shots and also totaled six rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Tyron Wright added 11 points for the visitors, while classmate Shamar Chester chipped in 10 points and four assists.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats, as he recorded his first career double-double. He connected on 7-of-10 shots, scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. He also registered a career-high four steals and equaled his career-high for blocks (4).
  • Junior transfer Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.), who totaled 15 points and nine rebounds in a 72-69 loss to Molloy Friday night, turned in another strong effort today with a season high 16 points and nine boards.
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) scored in double figures for the seventh-straight game and finished with 14 points.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen has played six of its first seven games at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats are now 83-18 (.828) at home during Daemen's NCAA Division II era (2015-present).
  • Today's game marked the 19th all-time meeting between the two teams. Daemen now owns a 16-3 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The game was tied at 8-8 seven minutes into the game when the Knights put together an 11-0 run. A layup by sophomore Elijah Blackman at the 10:34 mark capped the spurt and gamve the visitors a 19-8 lead.
  • Daemen cut the lead to six points, 23-17, after MacDonald canned two free throws with 5:36 left before intermission. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half and Queens took a 34-27 lead into the break.
  • Queens took a 44-32 lead following a conventional three-point play by Chester with 14:20 to play, but Daemen rallied behind a 16-3 run and took a 48-47 following a three-pointer by Fasoyiro with 8:18 left.
  • Queens answered right back with a 12-3 run that gave the Knights a 59-51lead with just over four minutes left.
  • The Queens lead was back to double digits, 64-54, when the Wildcats mounted one last rally and eventually made it a one possession game, 64-62, after freshman Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) made two free throws with 33 seconds left.
  • Queens answered with two free throws by freshman Eric Tynes, and after Fasoyiro was off the mark with a three-point attempt the Knights took a 68-62 lead after junior Dion Herrington made two free throws with 21 ticks left.
  • MacDonald was fouled attempting a three with 12 seconds left and made all three free throws to make it 68-65. Wright then missed two free throws at the other end, giving the Wildcats a chance at a game-tying three-pointer. Senior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) got a good look, but the shot was off the mark and Queens secured the rebound and the win.
  • Daemen shot a season-low 30-percent (21-for-69) from the field overall and was 2-for-20 from behind the arc. The hosts finished 21-of-27 from the free throw line.
  • Queens shot 42-percent (24-for-57) from the field overall and went 6-of-16 from downtown. The Knights made 16-of-19 from the charity stripe.
  • The hosts posted a 44-41 edge in total rebounds and a 22-13 edge in offensive boards—which led to a 22-11 edge in second chance points. Daemen also finished with a slim 34-32 advantage in points in the paint.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen is idle until next weekend when it hits the road for conference games at St. Thomas Aquinas College (Dec. 9) and Mercy College (Dec. 11).
