Wildcats Roll Over Rival Redhawks, 101-71

Daemen Tops Century Mark While Remaining Unbeaten In Conference Play

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Ten different players found the scoresheet and Daemen buried a season-high 14 three-pointers en route to a 101-71 defeat of longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference men's basketball action at a packed Voller Athletic Center this evening.

Daemen extended its winning streak to 10 straight games, improving to 15-6 overall and a perfect 12-0 in conference play. The Wildcats have won 19 of their last 21 ECC contests dating back to the start of last season. Their current winning streak ranks as the longest among all East Region teams.

Roberts Wesleyan dropped to 7-8 overall with an even 5-5 league record. Daemen has won four straight and 31 of the last 33 meetings with RWC, a span that dates back to the 2007-08 season.

Fueled by the interior presence of All-American center Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) and the three-point shooting of several of his teammates, the Wildcats jumped out to a 21-6 lead and never looked back. Daemen outscored the Redhawks 20-7 over the final seven minutes of the first half, taking an insurmountable 48-20 lead into halftime.

Daemen led by as many as 34 points in the second half and cruised to the victory. The Wildcats shot better than 50% from the field (40-for-75, 53.3%) and three-point range (14-for-27, 51.9%) for the fourth time in the last seven games.

Roberts Wesleyan entered the game with the No. 14 scoring offense in the country (86.8 ppg), but the Redhawks misfired on their first 13 three-point attempts and were held to 42.6% shooting overall (29-for-68; 6-for-27 from three-point range).

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Sischo racked up another double-double - his NCAA Division II-leading 18th of the season. He netted a game-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting and added 14 rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.
  • Grad student Kyle Harris (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the Daemen three-point barrage by shooting 5-of-8 from downtown. He matched his season-high with 19 points while adding seven assists, six rebounds, a career-high three steals and two blocks.
  • Grad student Sean Fasoyiro (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) also reached double figures for the Wildcats. Fasoyiro scored 15 points and grabbed six boards, while Mason finished 4-for-6 from three-point range as part of a 14-point, six-rebound effort.
  • Junior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) and redshirt junior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) were strong off the Daemen bench, finishing with nine and eight points, respectively. Daemen's reserves outscored their RWC counterparts 28-18.
  • Rian Carter paced a trio of Redhawk players in double figures with 18 points, including 17 in the second half. Abou Gbane chipped in 14 points and Amari Lee finished with 12 points and a game-high five steals.

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen returns 11 players, including all five starters, from their 2020-21 team that won the NCAA Division II East Region Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight.
  • Daemen entered the game ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region Men's Basketball Media Poll. The Wildcats are also receiving votes for the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top-25 Poll for a third consecutive week.
  • Daemen has shot over 50-percent from the field in six of its last seven games. The Wildcats are 221-for-420 from the field (52.6%) in that span.
  • Daemen has made 10 or more three-pointers in six of the last nine games, shooting 90-for-200 in that span (45%).
  • Daemen finished with a season-high 27 assists and have recorded 15 or more in 12 of their last 13 games. The performance tonight ties the program records for most assists in a game during the program's NCAA era (2015-present) and also the most assists in an East Coast Conference game.
  • Daemen owned a 45-30 edge in rebounds. The Wildcats entered the game with a +8.2 rebounding margin per game - 12th best in Division II. Daemen is out-rebounding opponents by 13.4 boards per game during their 10-game winning streak.
  • Daemen is off to its best start in conference play (12-0) since winning its first eight league games in 2003-04 when the Wildcats were competing as a member of the now-defunct American Mideast Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
  • This marks the third time in the last four seasons that Daemen has put together a winning streak of at least 10 games. The Wildcats are outscoring opponents by 19.2 points per game during the streak.
  • Daemen's 12 straight conference wins mark the second-longest streak since the program joined the ECC. The longest came in the program's inaugural ECC campaign (2013-14) when the Wildcats won their final 16 conference games and won the regular season ECC title with a 17-3 record.
  • Tonight's game was the 700th in the head coaching career of Daemen's Mike MacDonald. MacDonald owns a career record of 411-289 and ranks 35th among active NCAA Division II head coaches in career wins. MacDonald has won more games in his eight seasons at Daemen (154) than during previous stints at Canisius (108) and Medaille (149). MacDonald is also now 18-1 all-time against Roberts Wesleyan.
  • A two-time consensus All-American and three-time ECC Player of the Year, Sischo was recently named to the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List. He is NCAA Division II's active leader in career points (2,696), rebounds (1,382) and double-doubles (78). He is the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Daemen and ECC history, as well as the all-time leading scorer among all NCAA men's basketball programs in the state of New York. During tonight's game he moved into 20th place all-time in scoring and into seventh place all-time in rebounding among the NCAA Division II career leaders.
  • Tonight's output marked Sischo's 13th 20-point game this season and the 72nd of his career. He's scored 20+ points in 33 of his last 42 games.
  • Tonight's game marked the 125th of Sischo's career. He is one of only three players to appear in that many contests for Daemen and is just five more appearances away from becoming the program's all-time leader in games played.
  • Sischo has scored 323 points and grabbed 160 rebounds in 13 career games vs. Roberts Wesleayn (24.8 ppg; 12.3 rpg).
  • Fasoyiro stands 17 points shy of 1,000 for his career. He totaled 494 points during his three seasons at Franklin Pierce and has netted 489 points in 37 games at Daemen (13.2 ppg).
  • Harris reached double figures for the seventh time in the last 12 games. He's now connected on 24 of his last 48 three-point attempts (50%).
  • Mason has made at least two three-pointers in 17 of his 19 games this season. He leads the team with 49 three-point field goals. He entered tonight's game shooting 49.5% from three-point range, ranking first in the ECC and fourth in Division II.
