Wildcats Cap Road Trip With 3-1 Victory Over Mount Union

Daemen Has Now Tied The Program Record For Wins In A Season

ALLIANCE, Ohio. – The Daemen men's volleyball team capped off its week-long Midwest road trip with a 3-1 (25-16, 26-24, 25-27, 25-17) victory over the University of Mount Union tonight at McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex on the Mount Union campus. Daemen, an independent member of NCAA Division I-II, improved to 12-4 on the year and has now tied the program record for most wins in a season. Mount Union, a member of NCAA Division III and the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, dropped to 7-10 following its third-straight loss.

Daemen, which was coming off a hard fought 3-2 loss at Division I Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne last night, recorded its 19th consecutive win against a Division II or III opponent.  Like Daemen, the Mount Union program is in its fourth season of existence. The Raiders returns 14 players from their 2021 team that advanced to the championship round of the MCVL tournament, finishing with a 21-3 overall record.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 12-4 lead in set one and Daemen maintained a lead of at least six points the rest of the set en route to a 25-16 victory.

The teams traded points early in set two and it was tied at 10-10 when the Wildcats put together a 12-6 run to take a 22-16 lead. Juniors Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) and Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) had two kills each during the Daemen rally, and Milligan's second service ace of the run gave the visitors a 22-16 lead. UMU did not go down without a fight and scored seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 23-23. A kill by Couzens gave Daemen a 24-23 lead, but UMU tied it once again following a Daemen service error. Back-to-back kills senior Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) and Schneider would give Daemen a 26-24 victory.

Daemen scored the first four points of set three, but the Raiders responded with a 10-6 run that tied the set at 10-10. UMU later opened up a 17-14 lead, but Daemen scored the next three points to knot the game at 17-17. The set featured eight ties after that point, the last of which came at 25-25. A bad set by Daemen and a block by UMU then gave the hosts a 27-25 victory.

Once again, the fourth set saw the teams go back and forth early on in the set. The Wildcats held a 9-8 lead when the visitors strung together four straight points and took a 13-8 lead. The lead eventually grew to seven points, 17-10, and the Raiders came no closer than four points (19-15) after that. Daemen took the set and the match with a 25-17 victory.
