GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College women's tennis team opened its 2022-23 season with a hard fought 5-4 victory over Daemen University today at the HWS Tennis Center. Daemen, which opened its season with a loss at Le Moyne College yesterday dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
The teams battled for four hours and it all came down to fifth singles, where freshman Maddy Buck of William Smith outlasted Daemen senior Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.). Schayes took the first set, 6-4, before Buck evened the match with a 6-3 win in set two. Buck completed the comeback with a 7-6 decision in the third and final set.
William Smith won two of the three doubles matches, and the teams split the six singles matches.
Daemen sophomore Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) remained unbeaten on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over senior Audrey Camacho at No. 2 singles. Scime also teamed up with freshman Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) for an 8-1 win over Camacho and sophomore Julia Pida at No. 2 doubles.
Armitage picked up her first career singles victory at No. 4 singles, as she outlasted Pida in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Junior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) picked up her first singles win of the year following a 6-2, 6-4 win over freshman Haley Levine at No. 1 singles. It marked the 18th career singles win for Rubio.
Today's match marked the first ever meeting between Daemen and William Smith, which is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Liberty League. The match was played under the Division III scoring format, awarding one point for each singles and doubles match, as opposed to Division II scoring which awards a single point to team that takes at least two of the three doubles matches.
