Wildcats Open Conference Play With Loss To Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team opened its 2022-23 East Coast Conference schedule with a 7-0 loss to Queens College today at the QC Tennis Bubble. Daemen dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the ECC. It marked the season-opener for Queens.

The Queens tandem of Maja Makal and Gabriela Sciarrotta, who both collected all-conference honors last year, opened the match with a 6-1 win over junior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) at No. 1 doubles. Makal, last year's conference Player of the Year, followed up with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Rubio at No. 1 singles, while Sciarrotta posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Del Leon at No. 3 singles.

Daemen sophomore Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) suffered her first singles loss of the year following a 6-0, 7-5 setback to Apolline Lamy at No. 2 singles. Scime, who was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday, is now 4-1 in singles play on the year.
