Queens Scores Late, Holds On For 1-0 Win Over Daemen

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Queens College capitalized on its only shot on goal in the game en route to a 1-0 victory over Daemen University in East Coast Conference women's soccer action today at Varsity Soccer Field on the Queens campus. Queens notched its first win of the year and is now 1-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 0-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The first half saw limited scoring opportunities at both ends of the field, as Daemen registered just one shot on goal and Queens did not have a shot on goal.
  • Daemen registered the first shot of the second half in the 59th minute, as an attempt by sophomore forward Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) was off the mark.
  • Queens broke the scoreless tie just two minutes later after junior Marina Pappas took a a pass from senior Sarah Marino and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the Daemen net from 25 yards out.
  • Daemen pressured the Queens offensive zone the remainder of the game and registered five shots (two on goal) over the final 21 minutes. Senior forward Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) had a solid scoring chance in the 68th minute, but her blast sailed just wide of the right post from 20 yards out.
  • Freshman net minder Katelyn Villacres made two saves down the stretch to keep the Wildcats scoreless, one off a shot by Scalisi in the 73rd minute and another off a shot by senior Nicole Grichen (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) in the 76th minute.
  • Daemen finished with a 9-2 edge in total shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Freshman Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) made her first career start in net for Daemen and did not register a save. Viiacres, who replaced starter Ariana Vargas in the 54th minute recorded two saves for Queens, Vargas made one save before leaving the game due to injury.

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen had prevailed in the previous three meetings between the two schools. Queens now owns a 5-3-1 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The Wildcats finished with a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • Daemen has outshot four of its first seven opponents.

  • Daemen returns to non-conference play Wednesday (Sept. 21) when it travels to Cedarville, Ohio to face Cedarville University.
