Wildcats Drop Conference Match At St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the year following a 7-0 victory over Daemen University today at the Riley Family Tennis Courts. STAC, which was picked second in the preseason East Coast Conference coaches' poll, improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.

The STAC tandem of Ebba Rosberg and Sananta Villegas Robles, who both collected all-conference honors last year, opened the match with a 6-1 win over junior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) at No. 1 doubles. The host Spartans won all three doubles matches to earn the one point heading into singles play.

Rubio and also Rosberg battled at No. 1 singles. Rosberg outlasted Rubio, 7-6, in the first game, before Rubio answered with a 6-3 win in game two. Rosberg took the third and deciding game, 10-7.

Daemen sophomore Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) also turned in a solid effort in singles play as she battled Viktoriia Pavlovets before falling 7-5, 7-6. Scime, who was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday, is now 4-2 in singles play on the year.

UP NEXT
Daemen returns to the New York City area next weekend when it takes part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Championships. The four-day tournament (September 22-26) is being held once again at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center--the site of the U.S. Open--in the Flushing, N.Y.
