Scime, Del Leon and Armitage Post Wins At ITA East Region Championships 9/24/2022 2:27:00 PM By: CONTACT: Tom McDermott, Director of Athletics Communications | tmcdermo@daemen.edu Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. – Daemen University was one of 19 teams to take part in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region Championships held this weekend at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center - site of the U.S. Open. Daemen sent 10 Daemen athletes to the competition - four women and six men. The Daemen women were represented by junior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.), sophomores Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.), and Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and freshman Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.). The men were represented by juniors Sam Greco (Amherst, N.Y.) and Andy Gibson (Temecula, Calif.), sophomore Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshmen Adam Pasierb (Lancaster, N.Y.), Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.). WOMEN'S SINGLES DRAW Scime, Del Leon and Armitage all posted wins in the opening round, while Rubio was awarded a first-round bye. Scime squared off against Larize Nel of Wilmington University and advanced to the round of 64 with an 8-4 victory. De Leon posted an 8-0 win over Amanda Oppedisano of Molly, while Armitage was victorious in her first-ever appearance at the event with an 8-2 win over Elizabeth McGeer of Assumption University. All four Daemen players saw their time at the single-elimination tournament come to an end in the round of 64. Del Leon battled second-seeded Katarina Liebeck of Adelphi University before suffering a 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) loss. Scime lost the opening game (6-4) against 13-seeded Liria Loria of Franklin Pierce, but Scime forced a tiebreaker after posting a 6-1 win in game two. Loria secured the win with a 10-3 win in the tie break. Armitage went up against 15th-seeded Caroline Hany-Fawzy of Queens and suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss. Rubio, who was seeded 28th, faced off against unseeded Alison Isaac of Chestnut Hill and Isaac posted the 6-3, 6-3 upset. WOMEN'S DOUBLES DRAW Scime and Rubio teamed up to win an opening round match in the doubles draw, taking down Vanya Tyagi and Rupkatha Mukherjee of Dominican, 8-3. Scime and Rubio thenvsquared off against East Coast Conference rivals Elita Silins and Jemima Parkinson of St. Thomas Aquinas in the second round and the STAC duo advanced with an 8-4 win. Del Leon and Armitage also teamed up in the doubles play and they suffered an 8-1 setback to Verena Weindl and Alina Kupfer of Southern New Hampshire. MEN'S SINGLES DRAW The Daemen men went winless during singles play. In opening round play, Gibson lost to Joshua Arnold (8-1) of Franklin Pierce, Williamson went down to Alejandro Ortiz (8-2) of Franklin Pierce and Chitanand suffered an 8-3 loss to Henrique Souza of Adelphi. Pasierb, Greco and Lumanog all received a first-round bye. Pasierb faced the No. 1 overall seed Jonathan Berling in the round of 64 and suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss. Greco squared off against 13th-seeded Gabriel Balestero of Adelphi and suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss. Lumanog faced 17th-seeded Lennart Lehmann of St. Thomas Aquinas. Lehmann outlasted Lumanog, 7-5, in the opening game and completed the match with a 6-1 win in game two. MEN'S DOUBLES DRAW The Wildcats went winless in doubles as well. In first round action, Chitanand and Gibson squared off against Souza and Salomon Arce Lema of Adelphi and lost 8-2. Greco and Lumanog faced Francisco Gonzalez and Philipp Uhde of Queens and suffered an 8-3 loss. Pasierb and Williamson received a first-round bye and then suffered an 8-0 loss to fifth-seeded Cameron Henricy and Kareem Rashad of Queens. TOURNAMENT NOTES The opening round singles win was the team-leading fifth win of the year for Scime, while Armitage and Del Leon both picked up their second singles win of the year. Rubio now has 34 combined singles/doubles wins for her career, which ranks seventh in program history. The 2022-23 season is the 11th for both the Daemen men's and women's tennis teams. This marks the seventh time the teams have competed in the ITA East Region Championships. UP NEXT The Daemen men return to action Tuesday (Sept. 27) when they host Allegheny College in a non-conference dual match. The Daemen women are idle until Saturday (Oct. 1) when they host SUNY Fredonia in a non-conference dual match.
