Cats Open Up Conference Play With Sweep Over D'Youville

AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen University women's volleyball team opened up East Coast Conference play with a win by racking up their second straight sweep, and sixth of the season, in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) takedown of crosstown foe D'Youville. The Wildcats move to 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in ECC play, while the Saints drop to 4-12 on the year and 0-1 in ECC play. 

Although errors added up for both teams tonight (D'Youville finished with 20 attack errors, three service errors and 12 reception errors, while Daemen tallied 13 attack errors, nine service errors and five reception errors), the Wildcats out-killed the Saints 39-20 to finish with a .234 hitting percentage. 

Daemen finished with a season-high 12 aces on the night. Senior defensive specialist Mickaley Monahan (Saline, Mich.) and junior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) both notched three aces in the match. 

The Wildcats continue their homestand at Lumsden Gym this weekend with a pair of ECC matches, hosting Queens on Saturday at 1 PM and Molloy on Sunday at 11 AM. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) led the Wildcats in kills for the second time this season. The graduate student played in all three sets, knocking down 12 kills to earn double-digit kills for the third time on the year, and added 12 digs to finish with a double-double (kills-digs). Tonight's .312 hitting percentage was her second highest of the season.
  • Freshman Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) played in just her fourth match of the season, and finished with eight kills on the night, the second most on the team. She averaged 2.66 kills per set, and added nine digs and a service ace.
  • Masic took over setting duties for Daemen tonight, totaling 34 assists on the night for an average of 11.33 assists/set. The ECC-leader in aces added three more tonight, along with nine digs. 
  • Senior middle blocker Shelby Kersten (Alden, N.Y.) made her fourth appearance of the season, finishing with two kills on four attempts, two assists, and two blocks (one solo, one assisted). 
  • Monahan played in all three sets in the match, serving as libero for the Wildcats in the second and third sets. She totaled nine digs on the night, and served up three aces.
  • Junior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) notched five kills and just one error to average 2.5 kills per set. She finished with a .444 hitting percentage on the night. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Leading the team in kills on the night, five of Logan's 12 kills came in the first set. 
  • The Wildcats never trailed in the first set. 
  • Kersten has now finished with two blocks in the last two matches she's played. Her season high is four against Bridgeport.
  • Malpica's tallied eight kills on the night, knocking down three kills in each of the final two sets.  
  • In the second, Daemen and D'Youville traded 5-0 runs, but the Wildcats would turn it around halfway through the set to score seven unanswered points. Daemen finished the set with a 4-1 run to win it 25-16. 
  • The Wildcats out-killed the Saints in every set, finishing with 39 kills compared to D'Youville's 20. This was the seventh match of the season that Daemen out-killed their opponent. 
  • Daemen's five blocks on the night match the second-highest they've notched this season. Six blocks against Franklin Pierce in the season opener is the season-high for the Wildcats. 

GAME NOTES
  • This was the seventh meeting between Daemen and D'Youville. The Wildcats have now swept the Saints six times in a row.
  • The Wildcats have swept opponents six times this season.
  • Daemen's 7-3 record is the best start to the season since 2019.
  • The Wildcats have opened up conference play for the past two years with a 3-0 sweep. Daemen swept Queens to open up 2021 ECC play.

UP NEXT
Daemen continues conference play at home over the weekend. The Wildcats will host Queens on Saturday at 1 PM, and then face Molloy on Sunday at 11 AM.
