Women's Basketball Falls To UDC 68-47 On Saturday Afternoon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Daemen University women's basketball team rounded out the first half of East Coast Conference play with a 47-68 loss to the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats drop their second straight game and move to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in ECC play. The Firebirds move to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the ECC. Daemen is now tied with D'Youville and UDC, their last two losses, for second place in the conference.
 
Daemen shot 33-percent (18-of-54) from the field and 22-percent (4-of-18) from beyond the arc in the game, while the Firebirds finished 46-percent from the field (26-of-56) and 44-percent (4-of-9) from three. UDC's Latavia Jackson was the game's leading scorer with 23 points, followed by Destiny Ryles with 16 points for the Firebirds. Daemen fifth year forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led all Wildcat scorers with 14 points on the day and was the only Daemen player to record double-digit points in the game.

The Wildcats return to the road next weekend for a pair of ECC games at Molloy on Friday, Jan. 27 and at Queens on Sunday, Jan. 29. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Mickayla Ivy shot 55-percent from the field (5-of-9) and banked four of six free throws to finish with a team-high 14 points. Ivy added two rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks to her stat line.
  • Freshman forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) finished with nine points, shooting 3-of-10 from the field and knocking down a three and both free throws she took. Pikett finished with a career-high 10 rebounds, including eight defensive boards, and added three assists, one steal and five blocks on the day.
  • Guards Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) and Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) totaled eight and seven points on the day. Emborsky shot 43-percent (3-of-7) from the field and banked a three-pointer, while Paige finished 50-percent (3-of-6) from the field and knocked down a three.
  • UDC's Jackson and Ryles combined for 39 of the Firebirds' 68 total points.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's loss snapped Daemen's nine-game win streak against the Firebirds. The last time Daemen had lost to UDC was on Dec. 3, 2016 in Washington, D.C.
  • Daemen drops three conference games for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Wildcats finished that year with a 13-3 record in the ECC.
  • After the Wildcats banked the first bucket of the game, UDC went on an 11-2 run. The Wildcats brought the game within one point thanks to seven consecutive points by Pikett, but the Firebirds scored a three-point play at the end of the first to lead 20-16 after one quarter of play.
  • The Firebirds scored three straight three-pointers to open up the second quarter and went on to outscore Daemen 18 to 6 in the second. Daemen trailed 38-22 at the half.
  • Pikett and Ivy led the Wildcats in the first half with seven points apiece. UDC's dynamic duo of Ryles and Jackson combined for 23 of the Firebirds' 38 first-half points.
  • The Wildcats shot just 27-percent from the field in the first half, and made only one of five three-point shots in the first two quarters. UDC shot 48-percent from the field and 42-percent from beyond the arc in the first half.
  • Down 16 at the half, Daemen brought the game within 10 points with a big start to the third quarter. Emborsky knocked down a jumper and a three-ball late in the quarter to make it a six-point game, but a buzzer-beater three from UDC's Jackson lifted the Firebirds to a 47-38 lead after three quarters of play.
  • The Wildcats outscored UDC 16-9 in the third.
  • Daemen was held to single-digit points in the second and fourth quarters of the game, with the Firebirds outscoring the Wildcats 21 to 9 in the final quarter of play. 
  • UDC's defense totaled three steals and two blocks in the fourth quarter.
  • Today's 21-point loss marked Daemen's largest loss of the season.
